Help! Crash to desktop when i try to play the game (Read 1482 times)

Hi everybody!  Smiley

I was struggling to play my repetitively reinstalled CFS2 game when i found your community and i was wondering if someone ever had the same problem i have...

I installed the game many times, it plays the little watery scenery and when i press escape to acess the game i can use the buttons and tried many planes, many locations, many hardware settings, with and without the controller but if i try free flight or quick combat or any of the other buttons, the game starts loading the graphics for the location with a progress bar, then when it finishes loading i start seeing the bottom part of my desktop really big, then my screen turns completely black and after a few seconds i crash to the desktop.


I use Windows XP SP2,
-MSI KT4 Ultra Mainboard with VIA 400 chipset and onboard soundcard (latest drivers),
-Geforce 6800 (latest drivers)
-2 GB RAM
-Saitek Cyborg EVO controller


Do i have to play the game with Windows 98 SE on another drive?
Are you guys able to play the game with Windows XP SP2 ?

I checked a lot of forums, including yours but didn't find the solution to my problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as there seems to be a good amount of fantastic mods out there and i really like the graphics of CFS2 and the Pacific scenery.  Cry

P.S. I play Strurmovik in English and even CFS1 in french with no problems whatsoever.

DX900 I do not own Vista at this time but I will try to help you also.

Try changing the file call Cfs2_cfg and see if that will help you. It help another member and maybe it will help too.

Dx900 its a file inside the Combat flight Simulator 2 Folder. Go to My Computer/Local Disk C/Pgram files/ Microsft games/Combat flight Simulator 2 Folder and look for a file call  Cfs2_cfg. Back it up through copy and paste process in a Temp folder . Go back to that file and open it with your mouse by right clikig and picking notepad. Go inside it and erase the information with in it. Copy and paste the information I gave you inside this file.


Go inside the folder call Combat flight Simulator 2 and look for a file call Cfs2_cfg.bak and open it with notepad. Erase whats inside this file and copy and paste the information Iäm going to give you.

PS:The reason I ask you to back it up is just in case this solution dose not work you can always replace the file with the new information I gave you with the original the CFS2 cfg file.

I don't see anything wrong with your setup.  I've been running multiple installs of CFS2 on an XP SP2 system for years without any problem.  I think something is corrupted in your CFS2 install.

If I were you I'd rename the existing CFS2 folder then reinstall the game using the original disks.  Renaming the existing folder will allow you to do a new installation using the disks.  This is easy to do and should only take a few minutes.  Then, before adding any downloads, try the purely stock game and see if it will work.  If it does then you know it's something in your other installation.  

If you have lots of addon planes, ships, etc. you can move them over gradually, testing after every bunch and see if you can isolate the problem.  If you're lucky your addons are good and one of the support files is corrupted.  In that case once you've moved all of your addons over and the game is still running properly just delete the bad version.

Post back here and let us know what you find.

Wait a minute. Do you have more than hundred added Planes or AC to your install in your AC hangar. If you do this will happen. Reduce your Ac in your Hangar to less than 95 AC  and that should fix your problem.


I though you where talking about Vista Window! I reread your post and you have XP. Its a great Window!

Hi guys!

First of all, i would like to thank you, James007 and Cody_Coyote, for scratching your heads on my behalf.

I did yet another reinstallation from the original disks.
Re-cleaned the disks, re-did the installation without any antivirus or firewall.

James 007 i even tried your solution of replacing the Cfs2.cfg even though it was a Vista solution.

This is a game i bought a few years ago and that i wanted to play again , eventually with some mods.
Back then i think i played it with Windows 98 SE but i'm not 100% shure.

Do you know if there is a list of issues with CFS2 and Windows XP somewhere?
Otherwise all that is left to do is to try it on a new hard drive with a fresh install of Windows XP and all the hardware drivers  Embarrassed.

These disks are not buggy since i installed the game succesfully once...
Maybe there is a conflict or something with some updates i did for some other software...

Darn Bill Gates and Microsoft...This is a Microsoft game on a Microsoft Operating System.... Roll Eyes

I'll keep playing Sturmovik in the meantime.

I don't know where exactly you should turn next.  I would suspect some sort of video card conflict that is preventing the graphics of the flight simulator portion from displaying.  The menus you are seeing are pretty simple stuff compared with the moving graphics of the game itself.  Odd though that you aren't having any graphics problems with the other games.

For that matter I suppose it could even be a sound issue.

Check the ReadMe file that you'll find in your main CFS2 folder.  There may be some ideas listed there. 

Sorry my ideas didn't help.

I used to run CFS1 and CFS2 on 98SE but both are operating on XP now. I have my doubts it's an OS compatibility problem but, to be sure, open your CFS2 folder and right click on the cfs2.exe. Open the properties window, select compatibility, then check the "run this program in" and select the previous version.

The problem Dx900 is maybe that your CFS2 CD in losing its information. Believe it or not most CD start losing memory between four or five year after beign bought. Now if the CD is from a game that turn Gold its suppose to hold on to its information intack for over fifty years.

I found out about this the hard way. My original CFS2 CD is over 8 years old. I had problems with my window recently and I had to reinstall CFS2 on my hard drive. Guess what! some the information inside some of the Folder did not installed. I had to go back to my backup CFS2 install and place them there.

Base on my experience I recommend for you to buy a new CFS2 CD. They are real cheap now days and and they are worth a pound of Gold if you like this hooby.

After you have bought Combat flight Simulator 2. I highly recomend that you learn to build missions and campiagns with the mission builder. I"am sorry but I should have given you this advice first. Before you go and Buy a new CFS2 CD try getting some update drivers for your Video Card and see that will help you!
