I havn't posted here in a while so first I'd like to say hello to all of you who are still flying this old relic.

It's still my favorite combat sim and I've flown them all. I started on Falcon 3 back in the early '90s and then got hooked on F-4 for years but because I read so much WW II history and the fact that my dad served there, my heart has always been with that era. I found I didn't like CFS 3 at all and I became too spoiled on an "Open" sim to be able to enjoy a closed mess like IL2 or Pacific Fighters. Christ, after loading that sim, the first thing I did was to take off from Henderson and try to fly across Iron Bottom Bay to Tulagi just to find it didn't exist!  When the name of the game is Immersion, it means you have to be able to go there and live there. I can't live in cyborspace with no longitude, latitude or any way in or out.

One weekend with enough time, I flew a Copley P-38 in CFS 2 all the way from Pearl to Port Morsbee NG, stopping for gas and using the acceleration mode a lot.  I set it up to have just a few encounters with enemy aircraft and shipping but it was terrific anyway. Like the old saying goes, "it's weeks and months of total boardom interspersed with minutes or seconds of stark terror." That's how war is really like.

As you can probably gather, I've been flying this sim forever now and still love it but recently had to redo my whole system: new Intell Core II 3.1 Chip, Ausus Deluxe M Board, more mem, 8800 GTX graphics card and will probably add one more, even had to get a bigger power supply to handle all this stuff.

I also bought FSX and loaded that which may have loaded Direct X 10 on install.

Anyway, When I tryed to reinstall CFS 2, I found I'm having graphics issues with Maskriders bases and utils. When I get the objects and trees files loaded, all the rest of the scenery is lost. The jungle is just green squares!  All this go fast hardware I'm running should handle this old sim like greased lightning and it's running FSX with all the sliders turned all the way up just fine.

Could this be a Direct X problem or is there something I'm missing?  One thing that bothers me is that after installing and unistalling the sim to try to get this to work, I noticed that in "Settings/Add scenery" a new install of CFS 2 still shows the Maskrider scenery listed. Unless I'm wrong, this means the Maskrider stuff has written modifications to my Registry or it wouldn't be able to reappear on the freash install.

I tryed contacting Westervelt but he's changed his address and Leroy dosn't answer his mail on this old stuff.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thank you, Chris Olsen

Hi Chris. It's been a while since I did anything with CFS2. Can't help with the graphics issues but installing 3rd party files should not affect the registry. It's more likely that some of the Maskrider BGL files are still lurking somewhere in what's left of your original install. To do a clean reinstall make sure you manually delete the CFS2 root directory folder after uninstall is complete & before reinstalling. Please read my CFS2 FAQ page before uninstalling CFS2. http://www.simviation.com/lair/cfs2faq.htm

Alternatively, you can do a duplicate install. Rename the CFS2 directory to any name you wish to hide it from the install program. Then insert the CD & install to the usual location. You can have as many duplicate installs as you wish. All will run independently of each other.

You might also consider posting your question over at the Simouthouse CFS2 site.  Maskrider is a regular on that forum and you should get an answer.

Thank you both for the input.  I'll do as you suggest.

As for Maskrider, he wrote these addons a long time ago and he may be tired of questions about them. I wrote him first and found he had changed his email address. I then wrote Leroy, the guy who wrote the objects and tree files. The message must have gotten though because I didn't get an "email not deliverable" message back but he never did answer me. It was only after not being able to contact either of the authors that I decided to try the sim forums for a solution.

The only other possibility I can see is in fact, Direct X issues but I have always be led to believe that MS writes subsequent DX to always work with games/sims writen to pervious versions.

Thanks again, C. Olsen

Just a thought. FSX should install DX9.0c. You will not have DX10 unless you have Vista.

This could be a driver issue with your new video card.

No, I'm just running XP. It is always a good idea to check for driver updates even on a resent product. I'll check that out as well.
Thanks.
