Let's hear what you've got to say about it. As usual, StudioV is only as creative and progressive as it's members, so let's talk about it....drop it? Continue, restrict it? Take a sec and vote in the poll, them how about a comment or two about what you think about this feature... Smiley

I say stay with it. But people must know how to rate things. The process must be serious and overlooked. I myself enjoy rating other people's works and putting mine up for the rate. I should also say that one of the gallery judges should over look the shot before it goes in the gallery too. By far the shots in the gallery aren't all bad.  Also people should be motivated and really put effort in their shots. I see some shots that wouldn't compete with gallery Worthy shots and expect 9s and 10s.

if it gets too bad then I wouldn't mind letting it go.

One thing we need to keep in mind is that the Gallery Gates contest in January will undergo a major change, one for freeware, one for payware, and one for editing As it is, the current Rate It will undermine the new setup. Worse, it will compete against it.

I agree with mic that 9's and 10's have sprung up like mushrooms. I'm not a perfect scorer. No one is. We tend to see things differently - it's human nature. However, we all may need to take a step back and really scrutinize the entire shot before making judgement. We all want to get a shot in the Gallerys. It's my goal, but if I've learned anything great artists aren't born overnight.

As far as I'm concerned, stay with it, but we have to remain critical. A lot of 9.5-10's have been flying past, but then we've also seen a few really great shots (and some not so good). My suggestion would be that passing the grades allows the pic to be considered for gallery selection by the judges. If they decide it is good/not good enough, and tell us their final judgement, then we might have something here.
As for me, my aim isn't really to get a shot in the gallery (although that would be nice), but to get some constructive criticism on my screenshots. I notice that when I post something in the payware gallery (I fly mainly payware), very often you get hardly any remarks, or the odd "nice shot", whereas here often you do get some solid opinions ('needs more zoom, awful clouds' etc).  In the end, I like showing what I do, but I also like to improve...

Hmm, a tough one...

Rate This is a popular thing here in the Studio, not only because people's shots get the chance to enter the gallery but also because people get to rate another shot and fully express their opinion. But, as has been said, many shots are making it which would never have made it via the Gallery Gates, and also Rate This is taking focus away from the Gallery Gates (basically the main event at the Studio).

I don't think we should completely rule it out, but perhaps going with something like a "Rate This" week, or maybe think of a new system of Rate This then we could accommodate for both Rate This and the Gallery Gates. Smiley

The problem as I see it is that quite often we get shots that get a few good ratings but they never end up getting enough to tell whether or not they could've/would've got into the gallery.  Maybe we could lower the number of ratings needed to something like 8 or 6. Wink

Another problem I feel is that whether or not the shot gets into the gallery simply depends on who gets there first to rate it. You could post the same shot twice and have completely different results. I think it might be an idea to have a team of judges, and they're the only ones that can give ratings that'll contribute towards it getting into the gallery. Others can of course provide ratings but those ratings are for the author of the shot to learn from, and they don't contribute towards the shot's final score. This should also solve the first problem I stated if Clipper wished to keep the number of ratings needed the same. Wink

Still, I love the 'rate this' feature and I sincerely feel it should stay. It's fantastic!! Cheesy

EDIT; sorry to be tearing this to pieces, but I have just thought of another problem; if a shot has garnered 8 or 9 ratings and needs a high-ish rating to get in, people may be inclined to rate higher than they actually feel so as not to disappoint the person whose shot it is.

Good points from everyone, nice idea Clip and Mic, as I said in my response to Mic's post, we should keep it IMHO, but keep an eye on it. In principle it's a good thing, I like to see more participation by members, and more shots in the gallery. And almost all entries so far have been truly worthy.

Also, perhaps what Spyro said - every month or so have a 'Rate this Week' - perhaps mid month to keep it away from the gallery gates, and everyone will get one shot at rate this. And everyone has to swear to be honest when they rate other people's shots  Cheesy
I've tended not to rate unless I feel it's worth a high score, as like most of our members I don't like to offend others especially as they might be very proud of their shot. Maybe we should operate on the principle - you click on it, you rate it  Smiley

A good point, as I see there are quite a few pics that only receive 3-4 ratings and then nothing. There's nothing wrong with low scores, you want to know where you stand, don't you? Also, posters ask for a rating, so please give one. If a poster can't handle low ratings, he should either improve, or stop posting. If some people don't like a shot, that's fine, we all have different tastes, but remain constructive I would say, tell what you don't like, and how things could be improved, so everybody learns from that. That was the point of Studio V after all, wasn't it?

As much as I like the 'rate this', i find it annoying when people beg to get votes as it will get in the gallery.

Have it say, once a fortnight? Studio V, for the second time, has strayed away from what it is here for. Sure, we host contests to test your screenshot skill, but it is also here to help others, offering helpful tips and hints. For five pages, it has filled up with "rate this." I am too scared to go beyond that page really. In my opinion, it needs to "tap the brakes a little" on the contests, and consolidate its helpful hints and tips.

how about, the rateing goes on as it currently does, but before it goes into the gallery, the gallery judges must then seriously rate it, pick it apart and say it much achieve a certain score before it can be put in.

What about each member creating a Poll saying Rate this.
Options one through 10.
Each member votes.  Let's say you get a 10 when your 10 gets to a certain percentage.

Any thoughts or care to elaborate as I am in the middle of something?

I think a poll would take away the feedback that a lot of people give currently...instead they'll just click the poll....

IMO, it seems to be full of "standard" shots that people have just chucked in for the hell of it.

Quote:

But that would be 'moving the goalposts' so to speak... How about if there is a system whereby the shot needs to "qualify"?? - for example, an official judge would have to give it the nod before it was open to ratings. (Sort of like A-net  Grin)

Just my opinion.  Wink
