What sim are you flying? Have you added additional AI aircraft/traffic? Have you installed an AFCAD file for Schiphol?
What sim(?) determines what tools you can use to remedy the problems. Additional AI(?) might be filling up your gates. An AFCAD(?) that does not fit the visible scenery (i.e. was designed for a specific scenery that you don't have installed) will cause AC to park in odd places.
You can 'force' ATC to send you to a gate by adding a line or 2 to the aircraft.cfg. For the default (2004) 747 World Travel:

description="More than 30 years ago, the 747 made its first trip from New York to London. Since then, it's become the standard by which other large passenger jets are judged. Its size, range, speed and capacity were then, and are now, the best in its class."
atc_parking_types=GATE <---- will send you to any 'available' gate provided it meets the requirements for the AC.
atc_parking_codes=WT <---- will send you to specific 'assigned' gate that is configured in the 'parking properties' in AFCAD.
If you fly FS2004,
AFCAD 2.21 can make the required mods for both the airport parking and aircraft (Tools>Aircraft Editor in AFCAD). More detailed explainations are available in AFCAD's help file.
