I guess this is the place to vent this a bit. I don't post here often but I thought I'd enter the November screenshot contest since I had a cool shot kicking around my hard drive. Well after 4 tries to upload my image to Simviation, I kept getting a message that the image was too large. Give me a break, it was 800x600 and under 100 Kb. I Finally gave up and linked it to my Photo-bucket site. I then check my entry tonight and not only was the image pulled by the admins but locked as well
It would be nice if someone would shoot an e-mail about this and or at least not Lock the thread so perhaps I can fix the post. I'm no newbie when it comes to posting but this was ridiculous. Don't expect to see any shots posted here by me again, contests or upcoming aircraft projects.

Brian the image would have been pulled as part of the sites no-linked-images as it does slow the forums down for other users.
However I'm surprised you've had problems with uploading images, I've certainly had no trouble. However I'll have a look around for you

Hi there Mr Gladden, I've been posting here two years and never had problems with uploading pictures once I worked out how to do it. The shot does need to be around 96 kb max when you upload it, as it seems to gain some 'weight' during upload.
We have a lot of members, and a lot of people 'bend the rules' everyday, particularly in the screenshot competition. Linked images are strictly not allowed, and moderators don't have time to pm everyone. So images just get pulled. I'm sorry if this has given you a bad impression of our site - everyone here is very friendly really and people would be glad to help you get your screenshot sorted. I've PMed you with my email if you'd like me to take a look and try to put it up.
Regards
Roger/Krigl

I almost asked you to take screens of the uploading process that you did and then realized you wouldn't get those uploaded probably..
As Krigl said... try maxing out at 96 KB... next time you upload and get a file to big message... copy&paste the size that it says the pic is in here... ( OR copy paste the entire message in here)
You'll get there eventually

Brian,
The shot should not have been pulled.
The correct procedures were not followed by the mod.
Apologies.

96KB?!? I've posted images at around 98/99KB and they still show up within the 100K limit...

Yep. Anything up to 100kb is perfectly fine.

Just my experience guys...if I post something at 97kb, it ends up at over 100kb. 100kb uploaded exactly gives me a size which the system refuses to accept. It must vary from comp to comp, don't know why. Just one of those technological mysteries

It could be to do with the image software you're using to resize the screenshots. I was thinking about this this morning but different programs will use different code and some may possibly make slightly larger or smaller file headers.... just a thought.

This might depend on how you measure the size of an image. If you right-click on any file in Windows Explorer & select Properties you will see two values,
Size:
&
Size on Disk:
I've noticed with images that these are different.
The file size on the forum upload page is measured in bytes which might also affect this. I can't find an image at exactly 100 Kb to check it out. I've posted literally hundreds of images on this forum without a problem. If the file is rejected for being too big I simply compress it a little more.
Note the indicated file size of Vp1400.jpg in this example.
This proves that uploading images does not affect the file size in any way.

If we can condense this. There is coding pertaining to the actual image; the file also incorporates sourcing/directive information just like any other, much like when you type out your messages for these forum replies: there's more than meets the eye.

If you care to check the images I posted you will see that all the relevant information is there. All we're interested in is the file size. Anything else is irrelevant & complicates what should be a simple process. The file size of the original image on my hard drive (106210 bytes) as shown in the file Properties is exactly the same as that in the 'Upload results' window following my attempt to upload it. The maximum file size allowed is 102400 bytes so this was obviously rejected. That seems perfectly straightforward to me.

I often get this, if i save a file at 100kb exactly, the software has lied to me
and its actually something like 100.1kb so simv rejects it. Fair enough, i resize it and try again!
