Can trees be made with three planes? (Read 713 times)

First let me say that I know nothing of GMAX or it's limitations, so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Is it possible to make a tree library, say for RWY12 for example, with an extra plane to them? In other words, most trees now look great from the ground ( or the side), but look like a big X from the air. Could I use GMAX to make a tree with a horizontal plane too, that would use a second texture, so you would see a "treetop" when viewed from above?
(I also apologize if this is posted in the wrong place, technically I'm asking about the 3-d design of scenery objects, so I wasn't sure if it should be here, or in the panel and scenery forum)

I have also had this thought about two months ago, technically this can surely done, but I think there is no way to replace the FS stock trees,
and would it make a difference, if you added these trees to maybe 2 or 3 airports of thousand all over the world?!
Still a good idea. If someone knows or fins out, what the tree library is saved is, this could be a great graphic improvement.

Of course it's possible. There are several addons out there that replace the stock FS trees with better versions. Check out some of them (I'd search a few sites, just to be sure) and contact the authors. Find out what they know and see if it can help you.

Really? The only add-ons for trees I've found replace its bmp textures, not the trees itself.

I gather the Trees are designed in a 2D "cruciform" arrangement to ease the load, and rendering, on frame rates!
Zillions of three-dimensional, complex, highly detailed Trees everywhere would play havoc with frame rates, I would imagine!

I agree "F", but I'm not talking an actual 3-D tree here. What I mean is a tree just as they are already, only with the addition of a flat horizontal plane going through the midddle of the tree. True enough that it wouldn't do much good to place only a few trees that look good, and still have the autogens looking...umm.. uhhh..the way they do. Thanks for the input fellas, I'll put this one to bed for now I guess.
