So, i got a 'new' car.  lol its a '95 toyota camery... with 285,000 miles. (Newish engine-it runs fine)  Its got a decent interior, and a few rust spots on the exterior.  It needs a new Solanoid and rear shocks.  To be perfectly honest, i know next to nothing about cars; and rather than going and joining an autos only forum , i figured i might just ask you guys. I got the whole thing for $350, and i know the people who had the car previously, so i know they didn't hide problems.  So if anyone can toss some advise my way, (I have to do the repairs if i didn't mention that allready Grin)

Also, im hoping to adda nav/com radio to the dash, (Just not use the nav lol).  Not sure how i would get the power for that, if its possible i'd like some help.  Thoughts are always welcome.

Pictures to come.

Simple, really. Check the fuse panel for extra ignition powered slots. There will usually be both ignition and battery spares for adding electronic accesories. Make sure to properly fuse the feeder line and ground the device.

Thanks, im gunna buy a manual for the car so if i cant figure it (What you said) on my own, then that should help.   Grin .  Any ideas on the Solanoid and Shocks? or are those both fairly streight forward?  The lady i bought it from said that the solanoid might be part of the starter?  will that make it more difficult?

About the solenoid: Does it not crank over at all sometimes, or does it just crank slowly? If it cranks slowly I would first check the battery volatage. It should be at least 12.3 VDC. A full charge would be 12.7 VDC. Next check the connections between the battery and the starter for looseness and corrosion. Don't forget to check the battery's ground cable. I reckon 60%-80% of electrical problems are caused by a bad ground. Check the battery state (specific gravity) if possible. If the battery is sealed give it a good load test.
If it cranks over only sometimes, and everything else passes inspection, I would replace the starter/solenoid assembly. If the solenoid clicks it has bad contacts. If no sound is heard then the unit is likely bad.
A failing ignition switch can also cause similar symptoms.
Usually the hardest thing about replacing shock absorbers is getting the old ones off. Otherwise it's pretty much a nuts & bolts thing.
IMHO, for $350 a few needed repairs would probably still be cheaper than payments on a new car.
