I've gotten gauges over the years and I hate to give up the .gau file, but they won't work with the new fs's (fs9, and fsx, so I hear)....  Even some of the fs9 gauges are in .gau format.  Is there ANY way to convert these older files so they can be used by FS9, FSX by someone like myself who could, many moons ago modify and do limited programming in BASIC?  Is there a utility that could hook onto the .gau format and update the gauge somehow -- ?  - John Murphy

Eventually there will be such a utility. Hopefully freeware.

BTW, "Backwards compatible" means "you have to bend over backwards to make it compatible", if you know what I'm hinting at!  Wink

No there is no such "conversion utility."  I'm not quite sure the question is even relevant though, since the only gauges that won't work in FSX are those which were compiled with the old "FS98" header file.  These are "singleton gauges" that are no longer supported.

On the other hand, the below listed FS9 gauges are all dependent on msvcr70.dll. That file must be present in the main FSX folder, or in your Windows\System32 folder, in order for these gauges to function in FSX. As the others have direct replacements in FSX, they have not presented the same issue that Boeing777-300.gau has. FS9 gauges in question are:

737-400.gau
Bell_206B.gau
Boeing777-300.gau
Cessna172.gau
Cessna182ifr.gau
Cessna182s.gau
Kingair.gau
Lear_45.gau
Mooney_Bravo.gau

For those favorite FS98 style gauges, it's possible to extract the bitmaps from them and with a bit of XML scripting, breathe new life into them.  See http://fs2x.com/Tutorials.htm for some basic instructions on how to "code" XML gauges.
