Looking around trying to figure what medium to use for back lighting. First I was checking out electroluminescent strips:

http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/EL-5/213/ELECTROLUMINESCENT_STRIP,_5%...

Only problem I have with these is they run of 120Ac which kinda scares me as a potential fire hazard. But a cockpit fire could add to the realism of flight simming, hmm Im still up in the air on this.

Second choice were super bright LED's, found these cool little driver boards for hooking up 1w jobers:

http://taskled.com/ccxw.html

The LEDS will be long life and super low as far as power needs.

I don't know the possibility of a cockpit fire sounds exciting.

You don't need to use LEDs that powerful... and driver boards aren't needed for lower power (and cost LEDs).

OK.... you are officially a SICK PUPPY!   Wink

If you look in my pit....... there are REAL smoke detectors embeded in the panels and tied to the overhead ....with a test button and alarm silence and all.  And there is a REAL fire extinguisher on the wall in it too.  I was toying with adding an automatic halon system into the panels....... but that gets expensive and also brings up the issue of BREATHING in there.

Don't want to have to install real OXYGEN too.   Wink

best,

....................john

PS:  I decided against back lighting for the first go.  Really expensive and complicated.

John, have you looked at the backlighting method described  here: http://www.hanskrohn.com/start.htm

Check the Building Tips page if you haven't seen it. The method is much cheaper than others and the basic material is commonly available locally.

Yeah  got the idea from hans looking at it he is using the 12v from the pc power supply and basic hook-up board. Those LED's he is using are about 1 buck a pop. Im gonna have to pick his brain when the time comes, I think the biggest problem Im gonna have is setting up the print-outs to line up.

Steve,

Thanks.  Yeah, I saw that.  But it still involves a LOT of extra work (read "valuable time") as well as a bit of extra money (EFIS panel alone......... cost of the self adhesive films, about 8 $1 LEDS, some perfboard stock, more wiring, more power supply amperage, etc.) for just the backlight effect.  And plexi / acrylic is a real BI*&H to work with if you don;t have the correct tools!!!   Shocked

YES it is nice to have... and someday I might slowly replace the panels one-by-one with backlit ones.  But it was a conscious decision not to go backlit for the first iteration of the pit.

I'd say that if I had gone that way, the pit would now only be about 1/2 of the way to where it is now.  And this is already a LONG project for me.

One of the ideas I had was using the electroluminescent film with a panel facing over that similar to what he is using, surface mounted on wood or metal panels.  Bought in bulk enough for a whole pit at once, it might be cheaper than all those LEDs and wiring and perfboard.... and might be a real timesaver construction wise.

best,
