Just polished off two books in my recent travels:

Flyboys by James Bradley (no, not that one- it's about a group of USN fliers in the Pacific inWWII... Bradley also wrote Flags of Our Fathers). When I saw the title on the spine, i grabbed it just to laugh at it: "Good lord, not another "novel based on the movie" book..." but once I saw what it was about, I had to buy it.
It's very thoroughly researched, a fitting tribute to some airmen whose fates were kept secret for many years, and he gets into some larger-picture stuff about war and politics in the last 150 years or so that I found very educational. Let's just say that there is plenty in there that should be in American public-school history books, but isn't.
The only thing wrong with that book is that he uses the word "Flyboys", with the capital "F", way too often for some reason...aside from that, I recommend it highly.

Also read Michael Crichton's  State of Fear, which is a pretty bold and well-supported stab at the current obsession with global warming... cleverly disguised as just another silly action story. Classic Crichton. Grin I enjoy his stuff in general, but this was very though-provoking.

A truly outstanding book. The mental image of his friend "Kat" that I had whilst reading, I laughed until I cried.
In fact anything by Bill Bryson ( I have read them all)  would get my vote.

What's that word, skillydo?  Good book!  I didn't appreciate Bradley's moralizing from time to time, but overall, good book, highly recommended!

BTW, I didn't like the movie, Flags of our Fathers, not at all.   Huh

Book I finished last,  Blossoms in the Wind: Human Legacies of the Kamikaze.  Excellent book!  It does the best job I've read yet in getting inside the head of kamikaze pilots and sailors.  It goes very far in understanding, and shall I say, respecting them for what they did.  They don't compare with the current group of suicide bombers, and they don't appreciate being compared to them.

Couldn't agree more masmith. My best friend Steve brought it over last summer and had to leave it here. Superb book. What an incredible guy. Those Eagle Sqadron lads were mens men! And so many incredible adventures Shocked All told with great humour.
Due to the passing of Neville Duke however I'm re-reading his War Diaries at the moment. And the wife has just returned from three days in Budapest armed with two new Terry Pratchetts for me so they are next Cool

Just finished Dale Brown's Dreamland Series - End Game

I've loved Dale Brown's books for many years now and recently re-read the entire Dreamland series which I like the best.

The Dreamland series is an excellent series if you're into high tech weps and aircraft.

"Lives of low value" (Freely translated) from Norbert Hannig.

Narrated from the first person, the book covers everything from the beginning of his flying career in 1940 in the Hitler youth, his flight traing in 1941/42 and life in the Luftwaffe from 1942 till the end of the war, with lots of flying in 109s, 190s and 262s.

Nicely narrated (straightforward) and always trying to brighten things up a bit in a world in which his friends and comerades did like flies.
It's amazing how numb someone can get towards death.
