But this country used to make ground breaking designs pretty much all by itself. We didn't need to build parts for foreign aircraft, we built designs that were the envy of the world ourselves. Not long ago we were a major cog in building the first Supersonic airliner, oft recognised as one of the most graceful and superb aircraft ever, now that's something to be proud of being British for.

I'm afraid you're living in the past. Those days are long gone. Aircraft manufacture is a global business now. For various reasons one company can no longer develop & produce a new aircraft on its own, even a huge corporation like Boeing. A lot of parts for the new 787 will be built by the same companies that supply Airbus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_787#Production

Of course I'm in the past, nigh on everything that was great about this countries industry is in the past now, doesn't mean I'm going to swll my chest to the A380. What doesn't help it's case for me, is that it's characterless, it's silent and designed with no thought for aesthetics whatsoever, it's a typical airliner basically. As i say though, this is my opinion alone.

Exactly. It's a jet airliner. What do you expect? I really can't agree that it's worse looking than any other modern "cigar tube". However, if it succeeds (which is by no means certain) it will be a great achievement.

I'm as proud of the past achievements of the British aviation industry as anyone. I was fortunate enough to have grown up during the Golden Age of British aviation & been part of it myself but I have to face facts. We simply cannot compete in a global market & we never could. If you look at the sheer numbers of similar types manufactured in the US there is no comparison. A lot of my friends helped develop & build aircraft like the Harrier & were put out of work when the factory was shut down. This decision was as much economic as political.

That's a fair response Doug, think you've summed it all up pretty well.

You seem to have a knack for summing things up logically. Smiley
