Why apart from your wifes hand bag, required medical stuff etc do we need hand luggage. Every day the amount of crap that I see people take into the cabin is unbelievable. Also in this day and age of terrorism, all you need is you and your boarding ticket and a passport. Get rid of overhead bins and people would change the amount that they take on board. Leave a couple for just in case. Also boarding would be so much quicker.

I would like to echo that; unless it becomes an international standard for all aircraft it would never happen. No airline would take the risk of going bust for trying it on.

Anyway back on topic.

Considering the plane practically was reduced to nothing I think the death toll was fairly low myself. I expected almost everyone to have died, but 5 out of 6 people inside survived. I wonder if the cockpit crew made it out?

Illustrates very well the fact that most airline passenger injuries and deaths occur on the ground... people try to haul all their luggage into the cabin to save time checking them in and picking them up (and avoid losing it), then they're yakking on their phones during the safety briefing, and don't bother to note the nearest exit and make an escape plan.
Then there's the chaos that occurs when perfectly rational people fear their lives are in danger...

My usual business-trip kit is my tool case, which I check, sometimes with a duffel if I need more clothes than I can squeeze in the toolbox, and I carry on only a laptop bag/backpack and my flight bag, which contains my camera and snacks as well as my flying gear.
That's all- and in the event of an emergency, I'd never think twice about grabbing any of it before exiting.

"They" have got to come up with a better way of doing checked luggage.  By "they" I mean anyone but me (although I'm willing to consult, for a fee   ).  Getting luggage lost is stupid.  In this day and age we should have overcome this by now.  You'd think that with all the bar codes and RFID and computers and databases that they'd be able to tell they screwed up and put the wrong luggage on the wrong flight before the plane even left the gate.

Another thing that keeps people from checking their luggage is how long it takes you to get your luggage back after your plane lands.  I've stood for 45 minutes waiting for that stupid carousel to start up.  I could go home and come back in the time it takes them to get my luggage off the stupid plane (if it comes at all).

The best luggage check experience?  It's those little puddle jumpers where you hand the guy your luggage when you get on the plane, he puts it in the back, and when you deplane it's waiting for you on the ramp.  You get your luggage and go in to the terminal for your connection.  SOOOO much easier.  I wish they could scale that up for a larger plane.

Indonesia needs to get their act together.  Banning planes over 10 years old?  Sure that should do it.  They need to get on the airlines's case as well as make sure they educate consumers in what to do in case of emergency.

As for the carry-ons, I usually take a gym bag and keep it under the seat in front of me.  iPod, Book, etc.  Wallet and phone are always with me.  I dont like taking schlepping it, but its better than being bored all flight.  I really wish they would let me put the bag closer to myseat and put my feet under the seat in front of me, but I see there are important safety considerations.  As for the overheads, I think removing them would make the cabin look bad. Idk why, but i just think it would.  Look at a pic of a B1900 interior and youll understand why.
