I've gotten a hankering to do a Battle of Samar mission.  Those familiar to that battle will know Kurita's Japanese fleet came ranging down on American Eescort carriers.  Is it at all possible to simulate surface ships attacking surface ships in CFS2?

If you said no, I would expect that, but was just hoping if someone might have such a solution.

Thanks,
Darryl

in a way yes. if you use static ships then yes you can simulate them by using the triggers and inserting an Artillery Explosion effect object over a static ship and having it be triggered by a plane entering the area or the player spawning then an Artillery explosion will simulate an attack. If your using moving ships i dont think it can be done but i've been wrong before.

i enjoy long walks on the beach, yummie thai food, and obliterating my enemy's aircraft around them with a hail of bullets from 12 .50s. and/or a 75mm cannon.

I've thought about this in the past when I did a mission called Defense of Taffy for the Hellcat flying off of one of the escort carriers to bomb the attacking force.   The mission was flat because  I could not simulate surface gunfire on moving ships.

Using static ships and barrage effects would be one way to make it look better.

But there might be a better way.   Since ships will not fire on enemy ships in the Sim(and that is somewhere in the source code), we might be able to move the ships involved into the Aircraft folder and use them as AIs in MB.  That might work.  I'll have to try it, since there are several player flyable ships fairly common in the downloads sections, and they work nicely.  Ships will fire on aircraft and aircraft will fire on aircraft or ships.......HMMMMMMMMMM. Shocked

I really got this idea because when creating a new ship mdl file from FSDS2 FSC files, we have to place the 'pattern' ship folder into the CFS2 Aircraft folder temporarily, and change the name of the Ship.CFG to Aircraft.CFG.   Then I saw these 'player flyable' ships, downloaded one or two and found they worked.......they are ships in the Aircraft folder configured as aircraft.   Might have to do some doodling around with the CFG and DP files.
