Yup just as Alex says you don't need your own disc you can use anyones XP SP2 install disc doesn't matter, if anything you will just need your own license code which you already have.
I have reinstalled XP on many friends computers with my install disc and then register it with their license, completely legit.

Borrow a friends XP SP2 disk  Wink

And before anyone says anything, NO ITS NOT PIRACY!

...I've got Both disks...

Win XP Pro SP1 (OEM), and the SP2 upgrade-only disk.

Inserting the original XP SP 1 disk to correct any errors tells me that the disk I am inserting is "too old", and it refuses to accept it.. Cry...!

I would need to un-install my existing Win XP completely, then re-install Win XP SP1, followed by the SP 2 upgrade.
Which I'm trying to avoid...!

Paul... Undecided...!

It's still happening every time I try to shut down... Cry...!

Exactly Foz, borrow a friend full XP SP2 disk, and try a repair install from that  Wink

Yes, do that, repair with the full, not the upgrade one.... I have fixed lots of things with that CD Smiley

The funny thing is....

The past couple of days I have tried this...

Click Start > Shut down....

The screen goes blank, and everything freezes except the Mouse pointer... Huh....

....then...

I wait for about 4 minutes...

..NOTE: There is NO activity on my hard drive, (the light)...

Then...

The "Shut Down" option Window suddenly pops up... Shocked...!

I click..."Shut down", and the computer then does a very quick check, the HDD light flickers, and then the computer shuts down quickly...as it should...!

What has happened very recently, is that the computer has suddenly started to take a VERY LONG TIME to shut down...(without any Hard Drive activity!).... Angry...!

There is a very long delay between the time I request "Shut Down", and the "Shut Down" window appearing..!

Very strange, I'm thinking... Roll Eyes...!

Paul....shutting down... Smiley...!

Seems like something is preventing Explorer.exe from closing properly. It still sounds to me like a program is gagging when Windows tries to close it for shutdown. I've had a reoccuring problem similar to that in IE. Certain websites will "hang" for a few moments, temporarily locking my computer.
I've also experienced a simimilar problem with Explorer.exe(Black screen with operational mouse pointer). It's usually caused when a program won't close and I click ctrl-alt-deland try to close it using Crashguard, then click "don't wait"(or something similar to that) in the Crashguard box.  I often thought the culprit was Norton Crashguard and/or Windows waiting for something to close.

there is a way to prevent XP trying to shut down programmes 'successfully' basically this means that it will kill the process straight-off (much like the end process button in TaskManager) the fix is on the internet, and even on these forums (search 'Shut XP down faster' or something to that effect
Thinking about it this does seem to be the most likely cause....
