Hello Lads.

Here is a strange one... Shocked...!

Over the past couple of weeks my XP constantly refuses to close down correctly after being in use for a number of hours.

I press the Start Button to gain access to the "Shut Down" option window.
Pressing the pop-up  "Shut Down" causes the computer to freeze with a blank screen, (no Icons).
Only the mouse pointer responds when the mouse is moved.

The "Task Manager" can be accessed with Ctr+Alt+Delete but any attempt to close the computer down from there by any method results in a complete freeze of everything, and the computer can only then be shut down from the Power button, or restarted via the Reset button, after which the computer can then be shut down normally by the usual method.

Note: The Task Manager shows no unusual program activity being performed by the Processor....(all Processes are zero activity, apart from any mouse movement).

A virus scan shows nothing unusual, and Spybot shows no mail-ware, spy-ware, etc.

The only thing I can think of, is that something important has changed in the Windows Main Directory, preventing a proper shut-down procedure being accomplished from the Start Button.

Any ideas, Chaps...?

Paul... Cool...!

It might be some crossed wires in the registry. When did you last scan and clean it Paul?

Hi Mark...

I regularly do a Registry sort-out with the help of Norton's SystemWorks "Registry Sorter-Outer", but that doesn't cure the present problem, which is a recent occurrence... Cry...!
...arse...!

Paul... Wink...!

P.S. As a matter of interest, is it possible to perform a Windows XP install OVER the existing Windows XP installation, to correct any errors...?

(It was possible in Windows '98)...Wink...!

Paul are you using ZoneAlarm? If so shut that down before shutting down, I seem to recall there was some issue with it...

It might be a longshot but could it be that your powersupply refuses to shutdown? You say it happens after your PC has been on for a couple of hours. When you shutdown the PC manually (thus resetting the powersupply) and start XP again it works well. So XP knows how to shutdown. Could your powersupply be faulty?

Dunno, Crash...

It's a good quality, big power supply, 550 Watts...

The fing is...

When you shut down the computer via the Start menu, a Windows program should start up to automatically sort out any errors and put "things" in their proper place before the 'Puter shuts down on its own...
This doesn't seem to be happening. The magic "sorting-out" program isn't kicking in... Cry...!
Mark has suggested Memory problems....
(I am constantly troubled by that, but my 'Puter memory is OK...it being Crucial), which mine isn't... Embarrassed...!
I'm having a peek at my Graphics Card speeds and temperature at the mo' to see if the prob lies there...?

Paul...Where am I... Huh...?

Hi Paul, remember back in Win98 there was a patch that delayed the shut-down process a bit to give programs a chance to close properly? Could this be happening in XP? I know from experience thta IE 6 takes a few minutes to completly shut down after disconnecting from the net.

Paul are you running Norton AV 2003?
And do you have SP2 installed?

Norton 2003 has been known to cause this

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831431&sd=RMVP

And also SP2 addresses failure to shutdown problems.

Hello Pol... Wink...!

Norton System Works 2002 (OEM), with it disabled for a long time, (as best I can), I only use the "System Works" various Tools suite...they are very good...Wink...!
Grisoft AVG does all my Anti-Virus "stuff"

Service Pack 2 was installed about a year or so ago....(Thanks to the help of some Sim V Members, bless 'em!).

This annoyance has appeared recently, quite out of the blue, for no reason that I can think of, unless I have accidentally? switched one of the Services off...(Admin?)... Cry...!

I get the problem every time I try to shut the 'Puter down now, it can only be done by switching it off at the Power Button-(holding it in for 5 seconds), or at the Mains. (The reset-Button just restarts it again, then the same old problem re-occurs).
...arse...!

Paul... Cool...!

Again: Is it possible to install Win XP OVER THE TOP of Win XP to correct any errors or faults...?
A complete, clean re-install of Win XP Pro involves all sorts of problems.... Sad...!

Yes it is possible to repair XP.
You can either reinstall or select repair and it will replace any corrupt or damaged files.
i have reinstalled Windows before without it affecting any of my files (programs and such) but I have also reinstalled and it wiped everything out so look on the web for a guide to do it the proper way, I think you want to do it via the recovery console using your XP disc.

It's a funny old do...

If I boot up Win XP first thing in the day, and then immediately shut it down via Start>Shut Down, it all works fine, as it should do... Cheesy...!

...but after a day's browsing, running various programs, etc, and then try and shut down later on, or at the end of the day, then the problem occurs, it's impossible to shut down the computer via the Start Button>Shut Down....everything freezes!

No problems with fans, and case and Chip temperatures, or power supply voltages...Wink...!

Very peculiar...!

Paul...(also very peculiar)... Cool...!

Hello Pol....

...trubble is...
My Win XP was installed in two separate goes...
1) Win XP SP1 OEM Install.
2) Win XP SP2 Upgrade Disk only.

So inserting my original XP SP1 OEM disk to correct errors in my final installation, it says..."Sorry! No can do", "Your OEM disk SP1 version of XP is too old!"...."Bugger off!"... Shocked...!
...arse...!
LOL...!

...I've got Both disks...

Win XP Pro SP1 (OEM), and the SP2 upgrade-only disk.

Inserting the original XP SP 1 disk to correct any errors tells me that the disk I am inserting is "too old", and it refuses to accept it.. Cry...!

I would need to un-install my existing Win XP completely, then re-install Win XP SP1, followed by the SP 2 upgrade.
Which I'm trying to avoid...!

Paul... Undecided...!

It's still happening every time I try to shut down... Cry...!

Exactly Foz, borrow a friend full XP SP2 disk, and try a repair install from that  Wink
