On another computer (Windows XP pro., it's new) when I try to play an .avi on WMP11, only the sound plays, and no video. there's a little x next to the name of the file.

a codec is needed
instead of useing WMP use Video Lan Client the best open source media player around
just google Video Lan Client and watch your films with ease Cheesy Cheesy and the great thing is VLC will play literaly anything you throw at it
