Hi to all and thans for all the replay, thay have been very usefull and i will try all of them.
Maybe i was wrong when i said" incredible performance" i was meaning not the graphic but the level of FPS and smoothness.

Thanks Nick for your tips, i will apply them and see how my sim will performe, it is a perfect base from where to start.

When i have checked all this setting i will post what will be the performance( in smoothness) and also in graphic.
Thanks so much!!

Hi again Nick.
Have tried some of your settings. Your mip and mesh are slowing down my old rip (his 9800 iceq) with 5-7fps. I run 20-30fps at airport with 30% traffic and 50% others (not airport vehicles) at medium settings, also autogen.
Would you please try this old trick.
Run the sim. Set fps at minimum. Close sim. Make sure this is under graphics in cfg: LOD_TARGET_FPS=10
Restart the sim and set fps to unlimited. Close and start again.
What do your pc mean about that?

It would force my distance scenery and local scenery to become blurred and items to POP onto the screen instead of fade in and out in the distance. It would also cause my flight to be choppy and not smooth. That trick has been known to work in FS9 on slower video cards. One of the FS9 developers had something to say about that and I can’t find the post but if I do I will reference it. Photo scenery likes a higher or unlimited frame lock on lesser hardware too. It does not work for all systems and typically if you run unlimited frames you can expect to see muddy scenery because the fiber engine is being overtaxed.

What I posted in the way of terrain detail was not a fix it is simply what my hardware can do.

Hi Stefano

What it comes down to is what works for you in visual and smooth flight... if you are willing to sacrifice some things to get smooth flight and do not mind the visuals and how they perform, don’t change anything in your system and make sure to save a copy of the config file so you can restore what you had.

What I posted was not to say you were wrong! It was simply to point out why you are getting the increase in smoothness  Smiley

If you like what you see.. Keep it!  Wink  Smiley

HI Nick,
No problem at all, don't worry Smiley

The fact is that is that i have bought FSX as a challenge, known exactly what was going to do and what i could have in my hand.
Well FSx is not so bad as a lot of people is telling.
Of course with pc like mine, called from MS medium high Shocked is clear that the performance is not the best, but i can see that is possible to gain fps, just tweeking the FSXCFG like in FS9 ( BTW, i have used all your tweeks there and is running like a dream)
What means this, that without hacking textures, or system performance, it is possible to have the sim flyble, unfortunatly giving some graphic effect to have better performance, a nice amount of FPS for a smooth flight.

I am trying to achieve this result, and i have to say, that, and i am still experimenting, that what you told me in one of the post before, is working, and off course i was in a way wrong about ny discover, right now i have around 19/ 13 fps with a smooth enough flight.locked at 20.

And i am testing hard, because i am using the sim with a lot of work on my sistem, Yahoo messanger open with voice on, a lot of IE windows open, this just to test what kind of setting can give me the best performance in an  "hard ambient" maybe i am wrong again but, if i have quite fine performance in a situation like this, what could be when i start the sim with all the application closed?
This is my personal way to test this sim, that i start to appriciate more and more.
BTW, among all the advices you have given, i have tried to set FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.33 to a lower level of .1 or 0.1, tha fps has increased  enough.

Sorry if i abuse of your patiente for another moment Nick, but how i can set MipBias=6?
Is not present in the cfg, when i paste this line, the next time i open the file after a session in FSX, the line is gone.

Thanks so much for the attentiion!!

Stefano

Made a cfg with your settings. My fps went down to 9, and i have a long texture load when making a new wiev. Have no problems in distance with my setup.
Never the less, i just love this! (making experiments)

Hi guys!
First of all, many many greetings to all to have the most wonderful XMas and New years days to you and your families! Smiley

I think to have reached almost the maximum i can run FSX on my pc
P4 3 Ghz
!024 Gig Ram
ATI X 1600 XT
I have followed the tips from Nick and now, with these setting i reach from 18/ 20 FPS with a nice smoothness in the sim.
Remember that FPS is not so important to have the/any game smooth as much as possible, the xpert say that is a right balance in the pc that is giving better performance.
One can have a very smooth game with 15 FPS than one that has 50 fps and stuttering all the time...
Of course this is the theory, but is true, unfortunatly, specially with medium end system we have to compromise performance with fine graphic, and i have choosen this.
I am always testing the game in the hardest way to see what are " the limits" of my system, means find a nice performance with the system really working a lot, than from here, try and find also a good compromisewith the graphic setting.
I think to be on the right step, if i think that a week ago i was telling myself, well you have throw 55 euro in the trash can, now i can tell, well this is a onderful game.
In the beginning of my post, i was totally wrong about my discover, and, i have to thank him, nick open my eyes and make me realize that was logic the improvement of the fps, but with a loss in the graphic seight.

Now i am running with:
AA= 4X
AF= 16X
Adaptive antialiasing= performance
SO exactly the opposite way i was trying in the begining.

I will post my cfg file to make see the changes i have made.

I have found, on my system, that lowering FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=.001//OR 0.001

to this size, has given me the kick to have smooth fligth and good FPS, with a not big loose in the graphic site.
Well, as i have said before, we have to compromise and i have done...
It is still time to experiment, but with these seting i am happy enough, and i will wait for the patch, that seems will come out in the new year, and bevouse of this, i will not hack texture and so on, or better, the only thing i have done has been to chenge the resolution of the clouds and installed a patch from MS i think that has performed some terrain texture, nothing else, only cfg tweeks and graphic settings.

About the long loading time, it ia a known issue, is because, seems that in the game there is a wrong code or something like this that make the game, at the startup, searching for all the textures, that are not in the right folder or are failed, this is what i have read about, the expert can confirm this or not, but if someone has Filemon and setting the filter to FSX.exe, will see if is really true what these people is telling.

Sorry for this long post, but i want to give info to all and see if i can help.
Maybe i have been lucky with my setting, but right now i have a game running very smooth and with almost no stuttering ( other thing to check)
I  post now my CFG,  i prefer not my setting in the game, they are too much depending from pc to pc and hardware, but if someone want to know them,i will very happy to show them..

Thanks so much for the attention

Hi Stefano
I do have a similar system and I got up to 24-28 FPS but the question is…
Where with what whether and with what plane. At Seattle Boing Field facing north with Learjet and after fixing a long list of tips summer time clear sky on ground before taking off -22-24 FPS. My CPU clock is 3.4 GHz. So please reply to me and write me about what .CFG file are U referring in your post.

Stefano. As i told you. Just doing well.
Rafi. Dont get your eyes lockup on the fps. Get the balance in the settings. No matter if it shows 8 or 60fps. Stefano  is close on. Try it.

HI!
Actually i am not home so i can not look at my pc.

@Rafi: the cfg file i am referring is the FSX.cfg, that you find in the folder "your document"
I am trying to experiment with different planes and locations, but i mostly fly Cessna and not in heavy dense environment, but i will try other situatioms as soon am back home.
How you can get so high FPS. maybe the amount of ram?

Anyway i agree with kilotango, all of us has to learn and know that high FPS doesn´t meán smoothness.
maybe could mean the opposite way, if you lock the fps to unimited, the cpu will work to get these fps even when is not possible, the result of all of this is stutter and slide show fly.
I have also setted fps to 19 and found that was almost ok, now i have them at 22 and with my setting in the cfg file they are ok.

@kilotango:thanks for your support, now i have found whwre to work to get the best from FSX, but is a long way to go unfortunatly.
Actually the biggest problem is how to set the fiber frame level.
Low level like 0.001 gives the highest frame rate buy blurry textures, higher level gives better crispy textures, but low fps(when i say fps i mean the value pf 20/22 max locked at 22/25) to have smoothness.
My way to go on now is to find the right balance among smoothness and graphics, and i think will be to reise the fiber frame, not more than 0.1 and see what happened.
Another thing i have seen. is that at low fps, i have better performance than in FS9, and this is only good, because in this way i can work a little more with fiber frame setting.

As i said before, it is only the  way to find your own balance and live with this until vista or patches are coming.
Another thing, i have renamed the autogen file, and this give a good benefit.
I don´t think that change th VC to one more powerfull will give an enormous hint to the game, of course something will go better, but if we put a 512 Mb vc on a pc like mine (P4 3 Ghz) probably i will have a not good balanced machine, too big VC for a medium end pc.....

For now, i will not chenge textures, until the patch is out and see whaat can do, BTW seems the a patch will come out in the beginning of the new year and will be a patch for FSX running on XP.

Another tip is, and i will try whe i will be back home,  to lower the latency of the VC, means set it at 32/64 ms, seems that thios can give a better perforamance, do this with a little program called PCI Latency 2.0 or 3.1(google search)
If someone feel like to try this tip about latency, let me know!
Stay tuned, as soon as i can i will post you

Cheers to everybody!
Stefano

Stefano.
Try and set your TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT= to 400. I get a better picture close up and it dont take speed out.
