I will be getting my license in 8 days, and hoping to have a car by then or shortly thereafter. At the moment I'm looking at a 1996 Eagle Talon ES, 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass, and a 1994 Chevy Baretta.
Does anyone know anything about the reliability and characteristics of the cars? I'm leaning towards the Talon because it's the only one with driver, passenger, and side bags, it looks so damn cool, and it only has a 4 cylinder, so i will save money on insurance (God knows I'll be paying out the arse for insurance on a coupe in New Jersey as a 17 year old male...) and gas.

From the list, I would be leaning toward either the Talon or the Grand Prix. All are good cars, but I would make the descision based on the condition of the actual car you are going to buy (not the model).

If American car companies are suffering from foreign imports then clearly they are not making the cars the public wants. Maybe if they made a small, economical city car then they might have some success.

To this, I agree.  American car companies have shown to make an attempt at this, but its not seeming to catch on.  For instance, GM's new 100,000 mile warranty has taken roost.  Ford Motor Company has just cashed in ALL of there north american assets in order to fund there turn-around program.  If this fails, they are gone. (from the US at least)

Realy though, what's wrong with Jaguar??  I believe, as much as I may disagree with any topic, that a person deserves to be listened to.  Sooo.. ?

Remember one thing, the Eagle Talon is a nice looking car but, Check to make sure parts are easily available since Eagle is no longer and also if it shares part with another car.  I think some other car company made the Talon for Eagle.

  Grand Prix    O.K.

While I do share your feelings about buying American cars, I feel the need to point out that Mazda is owned by Ford...so if you consider a Jaguar an American car (also owned by Ford) you should probably throw Mazda in there too.  They do still have that "tinny" feel that many imports have, but they are owned by Ford.

It's basically impossible to buy a purely American car anymore. The Corvette may be the exception? Chevrolet partnered with Toyota as far back as the 80's. Ford has had ties with Mitsubishi and others. The Ford Courier pickup was manufactured in and imported from Japan by a company I never heard of. Chrysler has ties with both German & Japanese automakers. Blah, blah, blah...................

Just have all vehicles you are interested in checked over by a reputable mechanic and do your homework. I'll take reliability and affordability over status any day.  Wink

Although I would normally agree with you Giteen, it is my first car, and as I only have $2-3000 to work with, I'm buying whatever kind of car I find that looks good and runs well, and is reliable, be it a Ford or a Datsun.
I'll be visiting my father's favored mechanic soon as he sells used cars as well. Looking at a 93 Acura and an 88 Tempo. Probably won't buy the Tempo because my dad doesn't like the idea of no air bags. Still need to get down to My First Car to look at that Talon though.

Just a bit of advice, airbags or not...thos old Tempo's are junk.  My family has a 1989 Ford Tempo and...although reliable so far, it truly is a piece of crap.  If you have $2-$3000 to play with, you can get a much better car than that I'm sure.

You know that "Japanese" cars are manufactured in North America? I don't know how you can classify cars made in the USA or Canada as imports. Also, some of those "Japanese" companies use more "American" parts than "American" companies. For example, Ford uses a lot of parts from Mexico. So, you might be supporting the American economy more by buying a Toyota rather than a Ford. You never know until you do some research, you can't jump to conclusions like that based on such superficial observations.

WOW!  Seems I've given this post some serious spice. Tongue

I believe I have a correction to make...

...I made a Mazda mistake.  YES I know they are owned by Ford.  This was a mistake in my typing.

Next item, CHEESEGRATER

Yea, I understand that "Japanese" cars are made in the US.  My debait is not where they are made, but who you fund.  All or most of your money gets converted to yen when sent to Japan.  Please, if you have not already, GO TO JAPAN.  Tell me how many GM vehicles you find on their streets. Next to none?? NOT SUPRIZED This is due to their heavy importation laws and rules.

Next Next item, ELITE MARKSMAN

I sometimes intimidate myself with my own opinions.  UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO CONDITIONS would I try to pressure a point of view to the point of personel manipulation.  In other words, do what you wish, I'm not forcing. Wink

And due to the fact that Japanise cars are in just about every way superior to American cars.

With the exception of Ford you will rarely see an American car outside the US anywhere in the world.

And due to the fact that Japanise cars are in just about every way superior to American cars.

With the exception of Ford you will rarely see an American car outside the US anywhere in the world.

Also with todays oil prices you will get better mileage with any car that is not American. Don't misunderstand me, if I could afford a nice V8 big or small block I would, but when ever I am in the US and take a look at the gas mileage that is advertised on the window of a car for sale, I don't know if I should laugh or cry for you guys. The average mpg for an American car is 24.5 mils. The average for a European/Japanese car is 40 mpg. Think of the Christmas present you could buy at the end of the year with the petro dollar you saved. Not only that, but us Europeans could only dream of paying what the US driver pays for gas.

It certainly is polishing a turd ..... a disabled friend of mine (who gets a car almost for free on a motorbility scheme) had his Chevy replaced after 3 weeks. During those three weeks the brakes  almost completely failed .... the stering rack was replaced after that  failed on a high speed corner ( the dealer said it was nothing to worry about but we will replace it) he was lucky to make it round the corner and the car was towed back to the dealers. Then to cap it all the brakes caused serious vibration even under light braking.

Yeah, ex-pat you have a better point there.  LOL.  I never want a new "Mini" ever.  As for your first car elite.....it may be better for insurance to get a smallish, economical diesel care.  build a no claims bonus (if you have that in the usa) and use it on a good car in the future.

Thats what I am doing...just an opinion really,

The cheapest small diesel on sale in the US (that I can think of) was the VW Jetta (although they don't sell the diesel version of the new one yet. . .so that might not count, so that would mean VW's only US diesel currently costs $60,000 and it is a v10) followed by the $53,000 Bluetec E320 (which is the only 2007 diesel model in the US market that isn't a van or truck).

I've completed the first step to getting a car... being allowed to drive it. Passed my road test today, so now I can drive without a supervisor in the car.  Cheesy

It's been tough finding a car in good shape for the price I'm willing to spend, but there are some out there. Currently on the list are a '98 Avenger, '95 Stealth, and a '94 SC2, just need time to go look at them. I'm on autotrader.com, edmunds.com, and the classifieds almost every day, I'm bound to find something sooner or later.

It's not like the test was all that hard either...
All I had to do was pull out of the parking lot, parallel park, drive around the block, and park back in the MVC's parking lot.

And yet I know of 2 people that failed the written test 6 times each and the road test twice. I will not be getting in a car with them unless I'm driving.

You're given more challenges than that in an English test before you even leave the test centre car park.

Apparently, if you follow the rules in the test then you're not supposed to be asked to do a manuvere in the first 5 minutes of the test. In the Cambourne test centre 95% of tests start with a drive to halfway down the carpark, then a bay park within a minute of starting. I was given a minor for not checking my blindspot whilst in the car park aswell. He was a nice man. Really had it in for me. Tongue

Finally bought a car. 2000 2 door Pontiac Grand Am. It is in really good condition, the only flaw being that it has a salvage title, so I got it for $2500. Because of the title, my dad had my cousin, a mechanic for the local Lexus dealer, come out and look at it. He said that other than a few bumps where the parts that  were replaced meet the factory parts under the lifting part of the trunk (main body panel needed to be repaired, not just the rear bumper), you would never know it was in an accident. Frame was true and all the welds in the rear looked good. I took the car up to 80mph and not even a hint of a shimmy, plus it gets up to speed very quickly for a 4 cyl, and it will get good gas mileage.

That's the way to go, if you know what your doing, if you have time and are looking for a project. I could have easily bought a 87 300zx non turbo, which had been in a front end accident, the only problems that could be found were a lost front bumper, hood and flip up lights and damaged radiator, the alignment had also looked great. I could have bought the car for $350, and replaced a number of the parts for around $400 or the same amount of the car using used parts with a salvage title and it would drive practically flawless. Well, only go this way if you really want to and have time available and you know what your doing! with time and patience! Smiley Wink

No, Mexico has basically zero emmisions requirments. If it were true there would probably be more '57 Chevys and Volkwagon Beetles on this side of the border.

Mushroom, 57 Chevys and the old bugs are allowed on this side of the border. New Jersey has a law where antique cars do not have to abide by the current emissions regulations, and I expect that most cars have a similar regulation. Here, cars are considered to be antique when they are 25 years old. Many states also have a law where emissions regulations are only applicable to cars made the year they are passed or later. I.E. a '90 Bronco doesn't need to pass the 06 emissions test.

Yes, I realize that, but Mexico produced the the Beetle from 1964 into 2003, so those would fall under whatever EPA regulations were applicable for those years. It was also on the USDOT's hot list of gray market imports after 1978 as it also didn't meet safety regulations. I suppose a pre-'78 model might be snuck across the border without too much hassle.
I'm starting to think I'm in error on the '57 Chevy being produce in Mexico post-1957.

Even if it meets the regs you probably wont anyway... majority of parts shipped from iran (cheaper than mexico)
