A thought and an Idea, all in one... (Read 296 times)

First a thought.
i think that, obviously, there has been some conflict between two different parts of the studio.

I think that to begin with the studio was composed of two different sections, the gallery and the "studio". At first these two different sections glued and fitted really well BUT this seems to have fallen a bit.

I think that there are some people that use the studion for the right reason, well i shouldnt reall say right, but for the reason the "studio" section was made, to improve their screenshot skills and others' aswell and this is absolutely fine, no problems...

But there are some people that come to the studion  purely, solely for the gallery because they have become fixated on getting one of their shots into the gallery and this i dont think is the reason, even, the gallery was made. The gallery was made as a "celebration" of truly great screenshots and screenart but i think that this has been downgraded to a goal for some people.

And the fact remains that people are far far far more likely to make it into the gallery if someone else nominates their shots, but some people do not much else here than to nominte them selves for the gallery.

Now the first of my two ideas.
One way to competely iradicate this problem that has occured, the conflict of interests, is two separate these two areas and to make one section in the graphic gallery as the overall "gallery" and then leave this studio as a separate section.  And if this were to be done i would think that it might be easiest to incorporate it in the new forum coming in soon.

the other idea which is even less likely is that people should be frowned upon, not banned, but frowned upon to promote their own shots for the gallery, but it would be much better if all of the shots for the gallery were put up for the gallery by someone other than who took it.

what do you think?

just my two cents

cheers

You mean like sub-forums, for example you click on Studio V and you get a lsit of two forums 'gallery' and 'the workshop' listed like it is on the main forum page. I don't think it can be done on the current forums though, maybe when the new forum comes out. Other than that, nice idea!.. Wink

I don't know if that is needed... Clip and several others are already working on solving the Gallery issue...

Both should be able to co-exist

All ideas are appreciated and merit consideration. I personally think the Gallery should be both a general showcase for great screenart as well as a destination everyone would like to see their shots reach.  Although the sub forum is a great idea, it would demand much more of my time, time which I can't seem to find a lot of these days.  One idea we've been tossing around is having screenart submitted on each Sunday,  your pics nominated only by someone other than yourself. The polls can run until the next Sunday evening when they'll be replaced  by the next set of submissions. Maybe limit the poll submissions to a certain number each Sunday as well. A good way to maintain a really high standard in the Gallery and keep the Studio from running away again in the wrong direction. Quality, not quantity. I'm working hard as well on creating new platforms for everyone to express themselves artistically as well as have a comfortable place to ask any questions concerning screenart, no matter how elementery they may be. Of course, everyone is more than welcome to continue bringing forward ideas that may help in getting us realigned. Meantime, post a pic with a "how to" description, suggest a screenshot technique, maybe just post a comment on someone elses screenart and why you like it....let's take it slow and get our Studio back to where is has to be... I like to post screenshots here and ask peoples opinions of them so that i, and maybe someone else, can improve.  I dont feel comfortable saying why my shots are good (and i have good reason) so I ask for people to tell me why they are good or why they are bad.  Do other people like this, or is it just me?

Since Im the one that brought it up, Ill give my 2 cents:

I really had no problem with the gallery.  I got upset for more than one reason.  First of all, the gallery took over the studio.  Every time I came here I saw a million gallery posts and almost no real tips or help posts, which was the original intent of the forum.  Then when I saw that people were trying to get shots into the gallery by making biased polls, I had enough.  But thats behind us now.

I dont think that the gallery should just be ended, but it definately needs a break like what we have now so that the studio can get back on track.

My suggestion for the gallery is similar to what Clip is talking about.

Instead of anyone making a poll anytime for one shot, I think we should set up a weekly judge, kind of like a hotshot judge.  This judge will be announced on Monday, and if you want to nominate a shot for the gallery send a PM to the judge with a link to the screenshot.  Nominations would start on Monday and end on Saturday (like 2400GMT).  Then the judge would go through and pick what he thinks are the best 8 of the submitted nominations (polls can only have 8 choices) and on Sunday make a post with all the selected nominations, of course allowing more than one to be selected.  The poll would be open (maybe stickied) for a week and then closed.  A criteria would be set for how many votes are needed to make it into the gallery, and at the end of the week when the poll is closed the winner would be announced and entered into the gallery, the poll removed and post deleted, and a new judge would start taking nominations.   This would give us a cycle of gallery entries and nominations without flooding the board with polls and would allow us to spend more time focusing on screenart techniques.

Ultimately the decision is up to clipper, and until that decision is made we all need to get back to what the studio really is...

I think that if you havea  reason why you think your screenshot is good i cannot see a problem with that at all, and if your worrying about seeming big headed then dont because more often that not if you see something in it that is good you could end up enlightening others to that aspect and therefore do your self a favour...

2 - i wasnt saying that the gallery should be stopped and i wasnt actually thinking that we make some sub-boards but two actual boads like freeware and payware screenshots

i hope this works out soon.

cheers

I think you guys are quite right, an own gallery might be better, so that the Nomination posts don´t mess other forums.... I like the Gallery quite much, great shots and it keeps people improving their shots to get in....

But I allways liked the learn effect of the StudioV section, so those are 2 nice parts of SimV, and I think they might deserve 2 different forums than.

Just my opinion, I´d fully support it.
