that actually works. Everytime I see one that I think will do the trick, it comes over as a zipped file. Where's the sense in that?! Does XP Home have one in it? I am loathe to spend $30 for WinZip if I can get one free somewhere...

I use Winrar, very fast and easy to use.

You can get it here:

I use WinRar, so far it works great. Strange that a zip utility would download as a .ZIP file. I've never experienced that.

If like most people you only use it for extracting downloaded zipfiles you don't need a separate utility. The WinXP onboard Compressed (zipped) Folders utility should do all you want. This treats zipped files like ordinary folders so you don't even need to extract them.

You don't have to pay for winzip ........ you can continue to use the evaluation as long as you want.

Undecided I don't think that's been the case since WinZip 9.

They are never free.. the cheap ones get at least 50-100 bucks but the better ones go for 1000 and are much better at it.  Grin

eno,

When I click on something to unzip it, the WinZip thing comes up, counts off the days I've had it (about 200, now) and how many files I've extracted (455), then says I can buy good karma for $30 and really good karma for 50. I can get no further...

Uninstall winzip and use the XP default one. It'll open everything I've come across except .rar files.

You can still do that with WinRAR. WinZIP sucks, it costs $30, but won't open RAR files.

7-Zip and IZArc are free and good.

PowerArchiver 2006 has lots of features for $20. CNET gave it 5 stars. It has been around for years, just not as popular.

Have a look at http://zipgenius.altervista.org/zg6/help/index.htm

The freeware program offered there works very well. I use it all the time to unzip FS files.

This is all you will ever need. Free. It will do as may files at once as
you can load in it.

I have used it for years. Never looked back.

This in in the same class as Irfanview and FSscreen.
