Flight simulator X is designed to work at peak performance when paired up with a machine running Windows Vista and DirectX 10 yes??
a friend of mine who builds computer systems for gaming and for various corporations told me that the DirectX 10 video cards arn't out yet but will be coming out soon.
so i ask this... doesn't it stand to reason that when running on a maching with DirectX 9 and windows XP etc that MSFS X will not run at its peak performance???
of course it wont.
in my experience i have to complete a major overhaul on my PC about every 5 years in order to really keep up with gaming trends. Usually - not always - but usually - the release of a new flight simulator version is the indicator that it is time to upgrade again.
I had this computer built about 4 years ago, it still runs most games maxed out at blazing fast speed... but there are a couple of games out there that really start to strain her lately. that tells me that its about that time again. and - even though i dont know every forum members situation - i would only be able to assume that it is about that time again for most of you guys too.
Im going to go ahead and drop about 2 grand into this machine again (over time) and by christmas or early spring i will have built myself a new blazing fast computer.
its nice to go to a friend who builds these things for a living and say "hey - what would you get if you were going to build your own dream computer?" and when he tells me i say "build me one just like that."
i guess i will dump my old parts into my wifes computer - she needs an upgrade bad - and we will have to fairly high end machines - networked at that - for good gaming!
not much point to this post other than to say - Its probably upgrade time again... after all, upgrade time rolls around once in a while doesnt it?

when i was playing FS 98 - i bitched about the time and expense of upgrading so i could run FS 2000, medal of honor and call of duty etc. Then i bitched again at the time and expense of upgrading so i could run things like FS 2004 and COD 2 and company of heroes...
i guess my point is that the need to upgrade, and the demand for faster hardware is driven by the constant stream of demanding software titles like FS 2000 - FS 9 - FS X etc.
and YES Daube- FS X IS designed to run at peak efficiency on Direct X 10 compatable machines with Windows Vista. im not sure where you got the information that it was NOT intended to be used with such a system... perhaps the 8 FPS everyone is bitching about is not a strong enough indicator.
No money tree here. in the grand scheme of things $1,500 to $2,000 is not a whole lot of money to spend over the course of 3 or 4 months. i will conceed to the fact that it is a substantial amount of dough - but its not going to break most people to by computer parts over the course of a few months.

Reading the posts above suddenly made me having a nasty thought; seems to me like FSX was made to push the Computermanufacturers and Sellers.
Cause (almost) everyone who wants to run this Simulation smoothly needs a new Rig or an upgrade.
If you read about all of the current complains it´s almost a must to come to this conclusion.
But...i was "only" thinking!
It looks like chicken, smells like chicken, tastes like chicken, but when Chuck Norris says its Beef...then damnit...its Beef!!!

How can FSX be optimised for VISTA and DX10?
All the time FSX was in developement, DX10 hardware did not even exist. There were only a few enginering samples when FSX was released.
Ahh, but you say ACES has such an enginering sample?
Then explain why the sole one or two pics of what DX10 rendering might look like were just artists' rendering of what it might look like? They evidently did not even have a DX10 sample. So, how did they optimise for it?
OK, ACES has a copy of VISTA? Maby, but if was only realtively recently that VISA was anywhere near its final form
Can anyone say, just how VISTA wiil make FSX run better?
Fact is, even ACES is at a loss why many people are getting such bad performace, etc.
Then, there are the bugs that are docummented by now with new ones surfacing daily.
It all adds up to perhaps some bad code and a shoddy BETA testing program.
There will definately be a patch to addres some issues acording to ACES. Just what is addressed will be determind on a prority basis as all software is patched.
What is top prority? What ever people are complaining about the loudest, and so on.
FSX is not some "gift horse" where we should not examin its teeth. It is a big money maker, "a cash cow" and we are the customers filling the M$ coffers.
Bottom line, we are now the final BETA testers and it is our responsiblility to report all bugs and issues!

if you will recall similar discussions back when FS 2004 came out.
"Im getting low FPS"
"What tweaks can i use to improve performance of FS 2004?"
blah blah blah on and on and on
the short answer = turn your sliders way down and cope with it the best you can and/or overclock your stuff
the long answer = spring for a new rig
neither answer is satisfactory, but what else are you going to do?
all i know is that im going to be getting FS X for christmas, anbd my opinion is simply this... If the only real change to FS X from FS 9 is primarily eye candy... why not have a rig ready to take full potential of all these graphic goodies?
Im going to be ready this time... as my friend put it "just get me the money and ill build you a rig that will melt alien ware... just be careful when you turn it on for the first time, it might become self aware and launch the nukes or set the atmosphere on fire or some crazy sh*t."

Developers in most any industry have prototypes and modified models of current technology long (quite often 4 or 5 years in fact for things like cars and computers) before they accually admit to them.
Releasing screenshots of such tech only gives the competition the advantage of knowing what they have to build into thier own units to get superior results, which also saves the competition the money and development time that they would otherwise have had to invest when just guessing the future of the market....

the latest version of DirectX is DirectX 10 which "will only be available for Windows Vista"
According to various web sites DirectX 10 will ship with windows vista in early 2007 and directX 10 compliant video cards will be available within a few months.
Microsoft is a clever organization... do you honestly think that the release of a graphicly intense and highly anticipated flight simulator just months before the release of Vista and DirectX 10 cards is a pure coincidince?? not a chance.
im no fortune teller, but im fairly convinced that a dual core processor paired with Vista and a DX10 compliant video card will up the performance of FS10 by a notable margin.

Possibly not as clever as you might suppose. I believe I'm right in saying that the release of FSX was intended to be after Vista was unleashed on the public. Problems with Vista put the kybosh on that idea resulting in a quickly bodged FSX to run on current technology so it was ready for Christmas. It will need a substantial patch when Vista is eventually released.
PS. This was not the developer's fault but going on M$'s past record I feel they were a little naive to say the least.

i will agree with that... thus is capitalism... they wanted to rush the last few months of development to get it on shelves before christmas and performance of the product suffered.
obviously a patch is in order.
all i know is im not going to plop my money down on a copy until i see what the patch does and what vista will do - that is to say until im confident that i can run FS10 maxed out at 17 FPS minimum. My current system runs FS9 at 20 FPS with everything set to max so i would expect similar performance from FS10.
anyone else plan on upgrading to vista and the DX10 cards when available?
it would be interesting to see the performance difference in the game (if any)
