finally picked up my version of fsx yesterday, got it home and installed it after a couple of hitches in the setup).
the main question i'm wondering is will the Recorder Module or F1view work at all in the sim?

FRAPS is a Recorder Module
and it works in FSX.
May I suggest you try other items, like F1 View, and report back here.

If you want a video recorder I would thoroughly recommend GameCam. I had use of FRAPS a while back and it knackered my frame rate but GameCam is much better.
You can try it out (GameCam Lite is the equivalent of the FRAPS I had) without sound but with unlimited recording time. To get sound you need the registered version and that costs only $9.99, much less than FRAPS I think.
The lates version (1.4) has just been released this week. It works great for FS2004 and Golden Wings (and other games I guess) but will only record FSX in windowed mode at the moment (but you only see the screen not the window frame).
I've just been talking to them about this and it's being worked on right now.
