From what Ive read and viewed at numerous other sites, it appears that most computers will run FSX well without blurries and stutters, even on modest machines. The big problem posted by most is the autogen, which seems to drop frames from 50 to 75%, which is obviously a large amount. Most have reported great scenery above 1500 ft even with autogen turned off, so if the autogen issue can be resolved, we may be in for some smooth flying, something Ive never really achieved with FS9 and my system. John, I remember way back when 2004 came out and our systems were almost identical and we both shared the exact same issues. You have gone on to upgrade, something I am waiting to do when Vista and DX10 come along. I have read many of your posts seeking the exact same thing I have always desired, a stutter free performance, which never seems to happen even with good frames. I have settled on the fact that I wont achieve it with this version on my system, but FSX and a new system will offer hope for a resolution. Heres wishing you and all the other members good luck with the new version! Todd

Funny, I've been thinking the same thing Hagar.
I would think people are more anxious to show stuff off...

Yup Todd,...... if anyone looks back a the early fs2004 stuff here on SimV they can see the documentation for the "search for the holy grail" that a lot of us were on...... and unfortunately never found.
As to FSX... I don't plan to RUN it until I can create a killer gaming specific machine. Might BUY the new sim soon....just to see what it DOES do on this machine for comparison. But this one won't run fs9 well,.... so I am pretty sure that FSX will only run with stuff turned way down.
As I have said about fs2004... the only place the sim performance matters for me is on short final coming into a highly detailed airport with 100% AI travffic running and real world weather...... and getting stutter free fast framerates right THERE (consistent 25-30 fps). I can care less about smooth 60 fps at 30,000 over the ocean running on autopilot. I GET that kind of stuff. It is meaningless.
It is about flyability combined with graphics for me. Flying the plane is an awful lot about take offs and landings.
Just like fs2004.... if I go out and buy the program, what I am WANTING to buy is ALL that the marketing promotes. If I have to turn off the new features... then why am I buying it?
My last "go around" with two machines and two video cards trying to get fs9 running tells me that I will have to wait, and that I will have to spend a BUNCH of bucks to get 100% of everything out of FSX. And it does not make sense to buy an machine now.... with Vista and DX10 not yet released. The software price for the sim is the LEAST of my worries
.
I figure I am at least a year down the road on being able to run FSX. Sad.......... but likely.
Good luck with your efforts too.
Sigh........... here we go again.
best,
...................john
PS: Hagar,... I too have noticed the lack of definitive info coming out yet from those that have it. So far, the few screenshots I have seen have shown me that it is likely that people are turning stuff way, WAY down.

What do you think we've been doing.
I've got some shots of FSX
HERE
, and from what I can tell, I have a moderate amount of autogen set, and I can still get ~20-25 FPS over wilderness areas, and ~15-20 FPS over cities and populated areas. But you can't really expect to run it at max settings the day you get it, so I am very happy with how well it runs for me now.

Alright, here we go, I've got autogen and scenery complexity set to "Dense", and there are still two more settings above that, and here are a couple of shots of what I was getting...

I think FSX wasn't designed to run on *todays* top end machines. It's been programmed with a couple of years stretch to give the product shelf longevity. Personally I wasn't expecting it to run at it's maximum capability with my computer. But I know when I upgrade it'll still have something to give me in reward.

This is still October 6th is it not?
FSX just came out today and this is my third post already. I didn't install it until 0000Z and it's only 0217Z now. give me a break!
Here's two shots to hold you over . . .
I really don't have a lot to say about FSX
because I've spent less than two hours on it -- but standby one . . .

This normally happens after a realease of a new sim
a flurry of posts when everybody says they got it and first impressions then it goes quiet for a week or two as they get down to seeing what they can or cant do then another flurry of post saying how it "sucks and they need to change"

This is an endless cycle that is as inevitable as death itself. There's nothing we can do to stop it so we all have to suck it up.

I'm holding my breath waiting for these screenies because without trying to upset anyone, I've not seen anything yet that looks better than FS9.
Reckon the only way anyone can get any kind of decent FR is with all the effects turned way down - but I remain to be convinced

I have yet to see ANY FSX screen shots that equal or surpass the best that FS9 can do. To me it's not worth considering at all until Vista and DX10 are established. What about the rest of the sim functions, ie flight planning, ATC. etc etc Let's hear about the real meat of FSX (if there is any) Not screen shots that I can match on my low end system with FS9!!!
BTW Has anyone yet seen elephants from FL370 or have thay all been shot by poachers?

Well, I did get FSX today but have not taken any screen shots yet, but the flight was interesting.
I loaded it on an MSI K8N-SLI with an AMD 4600 and a 7900 GTX OC.
With the res set at 16X9 the FPS between High, Medium High and Medium Low was nil (21FPS average for all) but going to Ultra High dropped me to 6 FPS. Screen resolution seemed to make no difference either.
(Was flying over Los Angeles at 3000ft alt.)
Once I get a power supply back in my signature computer I will try it again with screen shots.

I agree with you that the first set of screenshots we had were not very good quality. People posting them simply had no time enough to find the balance between graphics and performance, and when you just get a new sim, you just want to fly it before tweaking it
But you should now have a look at those "What I've seen" posts, you may find them very interesting
(even I have to admit they do not contain much for the liner pilots).
Got bloom ?
Got mountains ?
Got damage ?
