I knew that the default was around 38 as REAL SCENE is 38m and from the demo shots I have seen, this clarifies it!
This is taken from the FSGenesis site which is a "payware" add on I wanted to post it here as it confirms the mesh that is default with FSX.
Quote:
The Next Generation of FSG terrain mesh has arrived!
Taking advantage of the new, improved FSX terrain engine, this product will take your terrain detail to unimagined new heights.
Featuring an incredible ...........
9.6m resolution for the United States
(default is 38.2m),
19.1m resolution for Canada
(default is 76.4m), &
38.2m resolution for Mexico
(default is 306m),
FSGenesis North America Terrain Mesh has been compiled from the latest, best available 10m NED, 23m CDED, and 30m INEGI source data.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 38meter RealScene mesh in FS9 for North America was incredible!! I can't imagine all of the United States in 9meter & all of Canada in 19m.

Sounds great, but how exactly is a mesh measured? Like what is meant by 9.8m mesh? I know its to do with how detailed it is...but wat does the 9.8m thing mean?

MESH
is a file which modifies only the relief of a given zone.
A scenery can represent an airport, a city, a building,...
A lanclass modifies the textures applied on the ground.
A afcad modifies the frequencies of airport, radio navigation, the parking's positions, ...
SRTM
means Shuttle Radar Topography Mission.
It is one of the mission of the space shuttle, the purpose of which was
to chart the terrestrial relief (90% of emerged world surface).
The data collected at the time of this mission are put has provision of the public.
These data have an accuracy of 90 M (3 seconds of arc),
it is has to say that a point of measurement gives the rise in a square of 90 M with dimensions.
The SRTM are currently the most precise free data.
They make it possible to carry out very great definition meshs, which was impossible
little time ago still.
DEM
is the abbreviation for DIGITAL Elevation Model.
the dem files are numerical ground relief representing.
SRTM, GTOPO30 are DEM files.
LOD
is the abbreviation of Level Of Detail. The lod is the level of definition that a mesh can represent.
A mesh in lod 9 can reveal details of 76.4 M, in lod 10 it can reveal some of 38.2 M.
while going up of a value of lod, the level of definition is multiplied by 2, the size of the file
increase approximately by 4 (makes some a little less, because of compression).
If the LOD is raised, is the mesh more precise?
No, the mesh precision is only dependent of the the sources precision
Increase the lod will not make the mesh more precise.
the creator use, in general, a lod adapted to the sources precision.
Use a too high lod leads has a loss of FPS.
For the srtm 90 Meters (3 arc seconds), we uses a lod 9, able to represent details of 76.4 M.
The resolution of DEM file is often expressed in arc second.
One arc second corresponds has surroundings 30 M on the equator level .

The 9.8m thing means that your terrain shape (not the texture, the form, the accuracy of the relief) is made of one point every 9.8 meters. You can often see the pictures of terrain modelling where the terrain appears like a grid. The resolution of the terrain is simply the distance between two points of that grid. The smallest the distance, the higher the details of the shape.
You can compare with FS98/CFS1. The terrain (mesh) resolution was so poor that a mountain would usually look like some sort of pyramid. With FS2004, you have a greater resolution, so the mountain is much better designed, its shape looks like a mountain.

Yeah I run FSG also as it it a global mesh for the entire world but it is around 78meter!
Then I also run my Real scene 38meter for US, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US virgin Islands. I also run Red Barons 19meter mesh for New Zealand and FS Genesis's 9 meter for a few other little spots on the globe! As with any mesh, the lower mesh will "over-ride" the higher mesh if you have it installed.
As you can see, the above is far more better than the Global 78meter but works in parts of the world that i have not "touched" with an add on mesh!
