Awesome book! The authors go to great lengths to *convincingly* dispell long held inaccuracies and untruths about the Battle of Midway. Some inaccuracies the authors put to rest:
* The faults of the Japanese loss are numerous, but the lionshare of fault lies with Yamamoto. Nagumo is pretty much exhonerated.
* The late launch of Tone #4's searchplane didn't cause the Japanese to not find the Americans in a timely manner, but it was Chikuma #1 who was at fault. Tone #4 in fact, found the Americans.
* The decks of the Japanes carriers were not filled with Japanese strike aircraft when the American dive bombers came hurtling down, in fact, the decks were mostly empty.
* Hornet's Torpedo-8's sacrifice did not cause the Japanese CAP to come down to the deck that caused the American dive bombers to attack unmolested as is OFTEN repeated.
* The invasion of the Alutians was not a Japanese feint to lure the American carriers out of Pearl Harbor.
This is the most exhaustive documentation of the battle of Midway that I have ever read. Where this book departs from all the other english-language text is the others almiost totally drew their Japanese perspective from Mitsuo Fuchida's book: Midway, The Battle that Doomed Japan (which I have read). There have been numerous sources in Japan since the publishing of Fuchida's book in 1951 that contradicts Fuchida, but western authors took Fuchida's accounting as the Japanese authority. The authors of Shatterted Sword takes advantage of these numerous Japanese sources and accounts for the discrepency between Fuchida and the other sources.

Another notion that the authors totally put to rest is the American victory at Midway wasn't the "Miracle" that it was portrayed to be. First of all, Yamamoto was "out Admiraled" by Nimitz, and because of Yamamoto's severely flawed battle plan, at the point of contact, the Americans were pretty much at parity with the Japanese, and actually had the advantage in air power.
Because of Yamamoto's ruinous battle plan, the Japanese were pretty much guaranteed the loss even before they sailed from the Inland Sea.
