I really hope my source is just a small BETA thing.  Cross ur fingers.

If you go to the Flight Simulator X Flash website, go to missions, and play the Red Bull Air Race one, in some shots, you see the gauges jumping to positions, rather than smoothly moving.

I hope this is a BETA thing, cuz I like smooth gauges.  I hav the demo, and the gauges look fine, but that vid looks dodgy.  Someone tell me i'm wrong. Cry

The gauges in FS9 are no different on a mid-grade machine. If you want smooth gauges, go with the RA Bellanca.

Hmmm... just think for a moment...

Any 'video capture' of FS (any version) is a sequence of  still screenshots taken at some timed interval (usually 1/second)...

...and then played back sequentially to make a 'movie...'

Of course the VC gauges will appear "jumpy!"  Shocked

Then you can explain why the flying around looks smooth...

XML-based gauges will always look jerky in DVC mode. Roll Eyes

Well, I'm no expert but seing what realair achieved in the spit I say that smooth gauges is just a question of designers investing in that area in particular...

The realair spit has REALLY smooth gauges, and I mean REEEEAAAALLYYY SMOOTH....Smiley there is no need for a 2d panel in a plane like that, in fact, realair didn't even create a 2d panel for the spit, and with gauges like that I don't think anyoine misses it...

Once again, the obvious escapes notice.  There's a huge difference between a needle moving 20 pixels on screen and an entire aircraft moving 500 pixels on screen, when seen frame-to-frame.

Well, if its the designers choice to make gauges smooth or jerky, then the ACES guys hav to fix it...  Wonder if they're watching this post?

<sigh>  I've tried to explain that what you see in a 'video' (FRAPS recording) is no different than what you'd seen in the sim if you limited the frame rate to 1 frame-per-second...

...of course it will be 'jerky.'

However, if the sim is running at ~18 fps or better, then the movement is smooth(er).  Obviously, the more fps, the "smoother" the gauges will display.

I'm not aware of any system that will allow FRAPS (or any other 'video capture software' to record at the actual frame rate the sim is running.

I think there is a misunderstanding here.
If I understood right, here is the problem:
- Video FPS = 15
- gauge FPS = 5
See what I mean ? the video is fluid, the aircraft movements are fluid, the landsacpe scrolling is fluid BUT the gauges are NOT fluid, not fluid at all.

But again, let's wait for the final version to check if this was improved...

I think most gauges in FS run at fps than the actual  fps of the sim itself....that's why they are not really smooth....if the sim is running at 20, some gauges may run with lower refresh rates, or lower fps...

So...If you fly in the si at 20fps and record at 15fps, there will be some "jerkyness", probabably you won't notice it because it is just a 5 fps diference but because the gauges wee already running at a lower refresh in the sim the diference in the video will be much more noticeble, ence the jerkyness...

Conclusion, the change in 5fps from 20 to 15 is not that huge, but the change from, say, 15fps to 10fps is...

hope it helps explain... Wink
