What a terrific story... good news for a change.
Another good reason to wear a 'chute when sporting around up there... Grin
No idea what the airspace or control situation was, but...

Wow! Shocked Good job in both the Hawker and glider pilot.

This is also a good reason to always get comfortable with the cockpit of the aircraft you're flying. If you're very low and you have to bail out, there's really no hope, but in situations like this where you have enough altitude, it's important that you're so comfortable with the cockpit, that you're able to get out of the aircraft, even in extreme situations. Cause when you're up there, you just don't have the time to figure it all out..
This is not something I think a lot about, but seeing something like this, is a nice reminder.

With glider parachutes, if you are passing through 300 feet and it is already deployed, you are going to have a bad day, but you will survive. They generally have a large spring in them to push the chute out. Once saw a friend sat in nice new Audi 80 with his chute on. His 3 year old pulled the rip chord, and the chute deployed, right through the passenger window.

Thats some damn good flying. I feel a bit embarassed to ask this, (as of yet my practical flying experience is zero, im a dab hand on the sim, but for another couple of months yet i havent sat in the cockpit of a real plane), but do not all aircraft have fuel jettisons? I was under the impression it was standard on all aircraft for this purpose.

Do any civil aircraft have fuel jettisons or have I been watchin too many movies?
