Airport personnel are reporting the pilot tried to take off from the wrong runway, which was too short.

If that's true.. if they took off from the shorter of the two runways at KLEX, it's probably the cause. Runway 08/26 is only 3,500 feet long. According to the manufacture's website..

CRJ200 ER
FAR take-off field length (SL, ISA) at MTOW

5,800 ft

Sad

I was just about to post the same figures. However if the pilot did try to take off on this runway, I would have though that it would be the boundary fence that he wound hit. 3500 feet is only just over half the required length and with a full payload.....

The CRJ has some known problems, such as uncommanded roll spoiler deployment (experienced that first hand) and elevator trim runaway. They are also very sensitive to C of G movement. I know that having nearly put one on its tailskid whilst changing the APU. However, as usual we are all guilty of it...........Speculation.

I just looked up the airport on google earth-I can see how easily the mistake could be made when it's dark.  Very sad Sad

Yes it's confermed (though not officially anounced yet) that the  Pilot attemted take off from the wrong, much shorter runway for whatever reason.

The fact that it was human error on somones part makes this tragic crash even worse as is should not have happened.  Cry

Home airports are KMGJ and KSWF in Orange County, NY&&Stop by and say hello. Smiley

As I said, when you look at the runway configuration, it was a rather easy mistake to make if one was just the least bit careless in the dark.

since the short runway is unlit I find it difficult to believe that mistake could be made in the dark. You'd have to be blind to not tell the differance.

Can´t understand that.Is it not possible to recognize the number of the Runway in the dark?
For an expirienced Pilot this should be no big problem?
So how could this happen?

Edit; @CraigL so we had the same thoughts

To both Craig and Arnimon-far, far worse mistakes have been made by more experienced pilots.  It's just how it goes.

I know that.
My point is, there is more to it than just a simple mistake.
Take off was what? 6:30 so there would have been morning light so it wouldn't have been completely dark.
