Want to install FSX demo; need SP2; need IE 5 for SP2, Microsoft site only offers IE 7... very nice, but alas(!) IE 7 requires SP2...
Sure, I'm a dolt, but it should be simpler to do this.

Okay, I see now that ver 6.0 should of course be fine... but why does the download site scan my computer and tell me I need 5.0 or later just to download SP2?
Could it be Microsoft's penchant for making everything needlessly complicated, which is why I tend to resist updates in the first place?

Check, please...  Tongue

Rotty, switch off automatic updates. Why give Uncle Bill control of your PC any more than you need? Download SP2 separately, put it onto a CD and install it that way.

Very weird... I had tried to download from that very page more than once, but it didn't work until I used your link. Thanks.
As soon as SP2 is installed, I'm turning everything off again...

If you mean turning "everything" off, SP2 runs the security center in services as well as the firewall etc. etc. etc., so a visit to WInXP services is a must.

Ever since I installed SP2, even the beta version of it, my rig has been rock steady, love it.

No don't turn everything off. You need anti-virus and I keep Windows firewall running because I've got a DSL modem/router with NAT so I don't use a 3rd party one.

Just go into the Security Centre (from Control Panel if you like) and in Resources on the left is a setting called 'Change the way Security Centre alerts me'. Then you just un-tick Automatic Updates and that's it. You never get the stoopid nag again! Easy.

You don't get the stupid nag, but it's still running using resources. It's got nothing to do with antivirus software other than to tell you whether you have any or not, the useless security center is the first thing to shut down..
...as for windows firewall.... it protects what and how? As far as I'm aware it allows almost everything you install without so much as a "what are you doing that for?" remark from it, it asks for server permissions but that's about it right?

But anyway, this discussion shouldn't be in this thread so I'll butt out Tongue

No you're spot on congo. I've actually disabled the security centre service on my machine as well but I didn't want to tell someone else to do it, just in case, you know..... Over-cautious maybe  Roll Eyes
