Hi all,

Just some thoughts...
I have read almost all the articles and seen all the videos and interviews about FSX. There's something that tends to irritate me, this is about the fly into space.

The fact is that up to now, nobody really confirmed that the flight was possible into space. The camera can go for sure, but will we be able to go into the map display, and set our aircradt altitude to 120 kms and speed to 8000 m/s ? I couldn't read anything that would tell it explicitely...

And some other issues could be raised as well:
- would scenery creation be possible in space ?
- There is no rocket engine in FS9. If there is none in FSX, how would an aircraft move ?

This space/real planet addition has given a whole new dimension to the FS series, and it's surely hard to imagine all the new addon types that will then be allowed by the sim... anyway I really would like to get some additionnal info on this subject.

Good question. We all assumed that we would reach space [or at least touch it] because the camera in one of the videos showed the transition from the ground all the way to the highest point. And on top of that, the word "space" appears in the title of the video released exclusively by Microsoft. Otherwise, what was point?

And do you remember the screenshot I posted of the Delta Flyer in Orbiter and compared it to the space video?

PS: The highest point in FSX [according to the articles] is 18,000 Miles. For reference, New York and Paris are about at least 4,000 miles apart from each other. 18,000 miles is four and one half times that distance.

18000 miles that would be a trip

and aneway i have a few aircraft in my game that i tweeked a little, that just slam into the 99999 barrear or simply stop going up. so i am shoure if you wanted to, just get the right jet. in fsx go to the cfg file of that jet increase the thrust scaller alot and that boring old ... what ever puts any thing nasa or the usaf has to shame. and you will zoom past any altitude records. Grin Shocked

though it would be highly un realistic like slew mode

i wish there where cfg files in real life  Sad

big or small i like them all ...? that dosent sound right&&slew mode dose not count as flying&&737-700aholic

Unfortunately, the Type 4 Rocket Engine was depecrated in FS2k, so true 'space flight' will not be possible.

However, that's not to say that one could not "fake it" using conventional jet engines... For some reason they seem able to "run" without ambient atmosphere...  Sad

They run only if you disable the engine flame-out in the realism settings. An even if they would run, they wouldn't have any efficiency at all, so your plane would not move...

I didn't knew about the Rocket Engine in FS... I guess it wouldn't be a great deal to enable it again. In huge programs, you never delete "useless" coding, you just comment it Wink

Lets hope that the SDK that comes with FSXD will hav FSEdit with engine types such as:

Variable speed Prop
Variable Pitch Prop
Turboprop
Turbofan
Turbojet

And... wait for it...

Rocket Engine!

Only hoping Grin

I THINK the plane can go into space, as on a video on fsInsider.com it looks like they used flew mode to get there?

Also what's the point of space if you can't get there?

if fsx will be backwards compatibly wih fs9 addons, nick's space shuttle should make it definetely... although its not accurate speed wise, it can still simulate the journey somewhat... or we will have to wait for someone to make the space shuttle

I would have to wait ANYWAY for someone to make a space shuttle with a VC Tongue

I was also wondering of this glider tow could be somehow adapted to simulate some kind of docking...for a space station, see what I mean ? Smiley

I'm pretty sure there is at least one developer out there who might actually try it.

I doubt anyone can make a decent space shuttle VC model, unless they are an astronaut...  Or anyone who can take detailed pictures of space shuttle controls...

From my comprehensive research, I have come to the conclusion that Space is a very big place!.... Shocked...!

...and that for we Earthly minions, it is also a very dangerous place!, to be avoided at all cost, upon death by nuclear radiation, shortage of breath, lack/excess of gravity, high/low temperatures, poisonous gas, attack by mutant spiders, etc... Wink...!

My advice would be; stay very close to the ground on Mother Earth....
.... and always wear a hat... Wink...!

Paul... Grin...!

Note: Star Trek isn't real....trust me... Wink...!
