repaints and textures (Read 278 times)

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

I tried to create my own textures for f-16 falcon. I donwloaded  white textures, but I couldn't open those files with newest Photoshop. Some of those texures open easily, but some of those files doesn't open.... So how could I revise those other files.

You have to make sure the file you are trying to open is one that is recognized by the program you are using.
Example if photoshop will only open JPG files and the one you downloaded is a bitmap then it will not open it directly you can try to rename the file extension to JPG but it may give you a error when you try to open it. The only other way would be to convert the file to a jpg file but I am not sure if there is a program that will do that. Each type of picture editor is diferent and some will ony open certain types of files even though a bitmap is a valid picture file it is a little different from a JPG file. 8)

Hi alde69,

The files you are trying to open in Photoshop from the texture folder are extended Bitmaps which I think photoshop can't read - MSPaint certainly can't.

All you have to do is download DXTBMP.exe - (Scroll to the botttom of the page). This is a program that can convert extended Bitmaps into 24 bit BMP image - which Photoshop can open.

The procedure below is how I can work with files in MSPaint - i'm assuming it will be roughly the same for Photoshop - although you may have some trial & error with converting to different files to find one Photoshop is happy with.

Load the original extended Bitmap into DXTBMP.exe -> Convert it to a 24 bit image -> Save as a new file -> open your new 24 bit image in photoshop -> hey presto! paint your plane.

When your happy with your artistic flair you just save the image again, convert it back (in DXTBMP.exe) to an extended bitmap (I have to select 'File type' DXT3) & then place that new image in your texture folder (using the original file name & overwriting the original file).

REMEMBER TO MAKE A BACK UP OF YOUR ORIGINAL FILE FIRST!!!!!!!

Martin Wright's DXTbmp is the program one needs to convert graphics' file formats. Martin  states:

"Things you probably need to know about editing FS textures. By default they are usually in DXT1 or DXT3 format. However both these compressed formats are "lossy" so repeated editing back and forth will soon result in a graphical mess. The first step is usually to convert to 32 bit. You can then edit as much as you like without degrading the image . You can either use the Extended 32 bit version in FS or convert a copy to DXT format for actual flying. The drawback with 32 bit is the filesize (4 or 8 times the size of the equivalent DXT) and performance (DXT formats are optimised DirectX formats and are stored and displayed using the Graphics card built-in DXT hardware). The normal procedure recommended with my FS tools is to load in the original texture, save out as 32 bit Targa or 32 bit Extended and then do all your editing using this 32 bit version. When you want to try the texture in FS load in the 32 bit version and save out  an Extended DXT version. For any further editing load the 32 bit version again. Of course if you decide to work with 32 bit Extended then
all the editing can be done directly on the FS texture itself
."
