Interesting read on the finalists for the name of the F-35, my favorites are the F-35 Reaper, and F-35 Lightning II. Spitfire II just doesn't sound quite right for it...

Can't they think of something original?

Indeed it doesn't. If they call it that there will be a riot. The Spitfire is unique. A thing of exquisite beauty & a national icon.

Already had a long discussion about this on another forum.
I'll certainly be annoyed if they call it a Spitfire.
And if it's called 'Lightning', it should be called Lightning

Spitfire, no, for the pure reason that the name "Spitfire" has no other meaning than being the name of one of the most legendary aeroplanes ever...
Lightning, Hurricane etc are fine as they have other meanings...
Lightning maybe - a little too soon after the EE Lightning for us though, although I expect we'll name it something different to the US, as with tradition. The F-4 Phantom is one of the only ones we haven't renamed...
Tempest would go well with Typhoon and Tornado, and maybe another name for the RNs variant...

Reaper has my vote, just as long as no "trying-to-be-funny" journalist calls it the raper. You would have to be very careful of your spelling when writing about it

ACtually, it's the F4H/F-110 later F-4 Phantom II.....
the first Phantom jet fighter was the McDonnell FH
FH = Phantom (1)
F2H = Banshee
F3H = Demon
F4H = Phantom II

I meant in the British sense - we normally give US manufactured aircraft another name, as in the way that the B-29 became the Boeing "Washington", the Wildcat became a "Martlet" and the TBM Avenger became the "Tarpon".

Spitfire II? That's absurd! If they do call it the Spitfire II, it'll have to become a legendary fighter just to continue to legend of "Spitfire" (which I can't see happening
)
Reaper suits it, not sure why, but it seems to do so

Completely unsuitable in today's environment - gives the wrong impression entirely, particularly with current accusations surrounding certain areas of the military.

I found this funny.

Britain proposed Fury, a favorite of many Lockheed and military officials but a name that risked a trademark conflict with the Plymouth Fury auto, this officer said
Doesn't that mean technically the plymouth fury could be an infringment on the sea fury?

I like "Reaper", too, but yes, the biddies will have a field day with it.
Accusations aside, I think these nitwits expect the military to do their job without hurting anybody, even enemy troops. :

All those suggestions are awful.
Spitfire II is just a abhorrance.
Lightning II also is pitiful. How can it ever live up to the EE Lightning?
Cyclone and Reaper. Better but still quite poor.
Instead of Black Mamber why don't they call it White Elephant?

Reaper has to many religious overtones. The personification of Death as a living, sentient entity is a concept that has existed in all known societies since the beginnings of recorded history. Whilst there is no direct religious link with the Reaper, depending on your point of view there could be. "Death" takes you and then you are in the hands of God for what ever awaits you in the afterlife. In Islam, Death is portrayed as Azrael, the angel of death. In this day and age, with word play, the press, and people imaginations, too much of a link could be found between the two. In the eyes of some corners in the world, the aircraft would have been changed into an American right wing weapon of religion. Like it or not, that is the way some peoples minds work, at home and abroad. The last thing we need is the Reaper reaping in an Islamic country. Remember what a simple road traffic accident did last week. The tabloids would have a field day with word pun headlines that in the name of freedom and journalism manage to always inflame a situation, bringing The Sun to mind, at this point.
Just a thought

I think it's a bit of overreaction - I never saw any lawsuits when Ford marketed the Laser (rebadged Mazda 323) in the same market the Plymouth Laser was being sold....

I think you have it wrong. I should sue the creators of Felix the Cat, since the name's been in my family for generations - at least dating back to a Pope (ca.274 AD)

No, no, no. It will be decided by a committee who needed to spend some time in a top notch hotel in an area of the world that holds the lead in natural beauty, so that the members can soak up the ambience with a view to producing the best name possible.
Or the short version.
"Guys, we need a new name for the F 35, so first things first, how much can we screw the tax payer on this, I am thinking Tahiti"

According to the promotional stuff, both. They're naming it after the P-38 for the US and the EE Lightning for the RAF/RN. All very cunning,
except
that the RAF had one or two Lightnings on trial in WWII and there were also recorded occasions of them being operated by RAF crews in WWII too...

So it'll be the Lightning III in British service then. As they're trying to compare it to the EE Lightning do you suppose that the RAF will treat it as they did the P38. And christen them Castrated Lightnings.

I actually think it's a pretty good name for the F-35, but I think it will still commonly be called the F-35, oh well.

Do you think we on the forum have the collective power to give it the nickname of Sh*te'awk?
Go forth to websites and forums and airshows and things and start talking about the F35 Sh*te'awk!!!
Actually I was thinking the same..
Do we as a forum have the power to change/ invent anything?

I am not a big fan of the name, but it is good for an official name. I guarantee it will have a seperate nickname, just like the A-10 (Official=Thunderbolt II, Not official=Warthog)

I love the way that the Lockheed website describes the EE Lightning as "lesser known". It's only one of the loudest, fastest, greatest jet fighters ever made.

those marketing guys at lockheed are really High on themselves arn't they, they wanted to call the 22 the Lightning II too, this from the same company that made the Original P-38 Lightning, come on. I would have called it the F-35 Money Hole lol. Couldn't they atleast call it the Lightning III, I mean that the YF-22 should count for something. This is purely PR

be glad you werent in the hangar the day they brought the 50/50 mock up of the USMC and USN/USAF the boeing X-32. you would have known immediately that this plane was not gonna be approved. designated as a fighter, who in their right mind would mount the gun INSIDE the intake!!?? thats just barely scratching the surface. i wont get into the other issues with this P.O.S. plane.
now, as far as the "Lightning" goes...its not fitting. lockheed, no pun intended, jumped the shark with this one. i think reaper would work, but everyone has to be PC these days. BAH!
a more fitting name for this plane would be something along the lines of maybe Aggressor, Shadow, Hawk Owl, Dominator II, Havoc II...maybe Facet? (more fitting for the 117 though)..i dunno, lightning just doesnt fit...
