Was it not "X" Sqn (as in EX and not 10) and then named 617 Sqn after the mission was over?

Don't apologise ozzy, that is only required, when you say to your wife, "Lets go to the Mohnesee and walk the dog".
It is a nice day and she is in full agreement. Normally an hour in the car, but well worth it. Mrs The-ex-Pat falls asleep as she does once we have driven 200 meters up the road.
I head to the Autobahn put the pedal to the floor and get on with it. Mrs The-ex-Pat wakes up and asks what I am doing.
"What are you doing", asks Mrs The-ex-Pat
"Driving to the dam", I reply.
"Which one", she asks as we pass a sign for the Edersee, 1 hour past the Mohne.
So the dog was walked at the Eder that day. Castle is well worth a visit if you are in the area though.

Matt

PS. When ever we visit the Mohne, funny, but she just can't let that one go.

The last time I visited the Mohne was whilst based at Gütersloh. We kept running up and down singing the Dambusters theme and asking any Germans that were handy if we could buy "I love Barnes Wallace" T-Shirts... and we wondered why they used to hate us sooooo much Grin

Sorry, but when pushed, we Brits win hands down, or should that be, hands up?

Ozzy, you even spelt it correctly. Gütersloh, home now for around 15 years. An Englishmas home is his Schloss.

PS when were you stationed here??

If you mean the army CQB no idea, it is 10 years since my last visit and as my reserve time is well over, I am not planning on checking any of it out.

Senna Lager, probably the worst Lager in the world.

Aye that'd be the bugger! I haven't been to Germany for a few years now and I only drive through, no intention of visiting old haunts... with the possible exception of one pub where I want to settle a couple of scores Grin

Well, Mancer Barracks is still here, and RAF Gütersloh is now Princess Royal Barracks. It gets to be interesting down town on a Friday and Saturday night. Saying that I was having a nice quiet beer last Wednesday evening with my wifes cousin, sat outside "Pats Irish Pub" in Drei Ech Platz (excuse the spelling, I speak, but I do not write), where the English phone box is. A group of lads who had come back from Iraq that day came and sat down all was quiet. Of course the beer was flowing and after about an hour, so were tables, chairs, glasses. The oficer in charge, a captain tried to convince Pat that  they where just blowing of post Iraq steam. Needless to say Pat did not see it that way. So scores can still be settled here in GUT and probably a few new ones developed!!

Matt

PS Herties is no longer, It is Karstadt now AND the BP lights have gone too. It is an Aral fliing station now. The Aral lights just does not have the same ring to it.

Mind you I hear that Gib has hardly changed at all Grin Several friends assure me that there are still regular rucks with the Spanish in the usual bars Grin

Matt (In a previous life, ex 617 Sqn, RAF Marham 1992)

617 Sqn was designated "Squadron X" on March 15th, 1943, until it was assigned the number "617" on the 21'st March 1943.  Wink

Sqn "X" was simply so Gibson had something to start working with, he was effectively forming the squadron before it officially existed.
