Very impressive scenery visuals!  The water is finally somewhat relaistic.

And they have taken a chapter from stuff like FSPassengers, Cargo Dogs, and other "adventure" type add-ons and put in some sorts of functional "missions" with pre-set scenarios and animations.

I think we all have to keep in mind here that Microsoft is, of course, showing the best "eye candy" that they can.  This is marketing.  So remember that just like the experiences with fs2004......... if you don't have all the settings maxed and sliders full on....... you likely won't get all of that great stuff.

How much you will get for a given level of sliders maxed and buttons checked will likely only be determined after it is in the hands of the actual simmers.  I keep coming back to asking myself what level of machine will let you max everything and get all that Microsoft is "promising"?

Start saving for the new computer now.   Wink

The part where the plane races the truck really impressed me. It makes me wonder if M$ is actually implementing drivable cars and trucks.

It seems that those who make miscellaneous addons [Hamas, Bill Lyons, etc.] have grabbed M$'s attention.

On a more serious matter, I think that the game is going to need more options in the menu.  In FS9, your display options are fairly limited, and mostly general.  I think that they need to give you more options for scenery settings.  For example, instead of having just 2 autogen sliders, have multiple ones: One for trees, one for buildings, one for airport facilities, etc.  For traffic and dynamic stuff, allow you to change the density of air traffic, ground traffic, birds, animals, people, etc.  Those are just 2 examples, but I really think that the options and settings will make or break the game for many of us.  Everyone keeps worrying about their computer not handling the game.  While your computer (and my computer) probably wont handle the game as we see it in the videos, im sure that everyone here (with the exception of those using really old computers with below 2 Ghz processors and not so good vid cards) will be able to use FSX.  The real reason to buy it is not the eye candy, but for all the overall improvements.  I mean, I can run with my settings near max and get good frames.  I might have to tune them down for FSX, but from what weve seen, it will be worth it.  It looks like we will have fixed flight dynamics, better graphics, better scenery, better texture mapping, better terrain.

I'm inclined to agree Jake - the M$ videos are probably taken from super-hyper-microsoft-has-bought-the-best-computer, and many (like myself) have...well... "humble" systems, and are probably worried about how FSX will run. With more sliders and settings, this can REALLY enhance it for us as we would be able to be more selective and enhance on areas of which we want, and cut down on those which absorb framerates. Smiley

What?  Mine is 2.20 GHz.

But as far as the settings goes, look at all the stuff we saw in the video.  That was all taken probably with sliders maxed on the best dual core processor money can buy with at least 4 GB of RAM and Dual SLi with 7800GTs.  But what if in settings we can turn off sun glint, water reflections, animated animals, animated people, animated ground scenery.  Turn off all of these details and you still have a great looking game and you wouldnt be watching a slideshow

One of the developers went through this on Avsim. I can't remember the details but the computer used wasn't anything out of the ordinary and certainly wasn't cutting edge, something like 2.5ghz processor, 2 gig memory, I've gone blank on the graphics card but it wasn't particularly high end. Everything you see uses DX9.
Hope that helps a bit.

Ok, Im going to get alot of crap from this but other than the eye candy, no one from MS has mentioned anything about the new sim functions.  Eye candy is great, but after we have saved the guys on the rig, will you fly the mission again?  After we have seen the birds and the elephants, will we continue to fly around trying to see them?  I guess what Im getting at here is that the eye candy is great, but what about the core sim? I am really hoping for a major improvement in the weather, ATC, airport operations, and flight dynamics.  I am sure they will be better, but if they arent improved much, will this sim hold my attention more than 2004.  It  is interesting to note how my simming has change as I have learned more about flying.  When I started I flew around looking at all the buildings and did stunts and such and didnt worry about the fuel and the mixture and ILS.  Now that I have more experience I enjoy planning a flight from start up to touch down and trying to overcome weather and other obstacles.  Thats why I am hoping that the core sim undergoes a major upgrade.  I guess MS has its work cut out because there are just as many of you whom  prefer to fly VFR and plan your route that way while enjoying the scenery.  It will be interesting to see what "other" changes to the sim are annouced in the upcoming months.  My two cents on the subject.  Todd

You're right in terms of the flight sim engine. But you have to remember that just like any other company competing in the market, M$ won't show "all" the details so that their corporate rivals won't be able to know the true details until the very moment the sim is released. That's just the way it is in Corporate America.

Hey Todd... it's a marketing movie... it has to be flashy and attractive! Surely MS won't go shouting about new complex pro-simmer stuff. They want to attract as many new people to the sim as possible.

However, together with you, I hope they'll incorporate many new and exciting possibilities simulation-wise. To make it ever so realistic as possible...

Fingers crossed!  Wink

That video was absolutely stunning. It really did impress me. FSX looks just as good as I thought it would. The appearance of Shockwave (the truck) made it seem all the more wonderful. FSX is really looking like it's going to be pretty damned awesome.

And yet, chances are I won't be buying it... Sad

Todd

Anybody had a look to the Fsinsider FSX fact sheet ?
http://www.fsinsider.com/product/FSX_fact_sheet.htm

some points:
Connected world. Through increased online gameplay capabilities, Flight Simulator X offers players a connected world where they can choose whom they want to be, from an air-traffic controller, pilot, or co-pilot as they interact with other aviators from around the globe by chatting in real time via headset and keyboard.
Interactive airports. More than 24,000 airports feature artificial intelligence-controlled jetways, fuel trucks, and moving baggage carts, allowing players to explore their hometown or venture to a favorite far-off city.

Nothing very precise of course, but anyway this is already very interesting I think Smiley Looks like we will finally have some life in the airports, as well as an IVAO-like network.

Daube,

In fairness, I beleive that Cavity (Todd) posted that comment before the factsheet was releaased on the FSInsider page.

That "factsheet" does list some intriging changes.  So they seem to be working on both ends of the spectrum...... "gaming" and "simulation".

Up until that sheet...... the focus of communication on the upcoming release seemed to be more on eye candy and gaming.  And even now they still use the word "game' and "gaming" a lot.  Obviously it's "market positioning".... but if they position it that way.... real gamers will not be "fooled" unless is has been "tweeked" a bunch to appeal top them.

best,

Even with qual SLI (as we currently know it) FSX will still bog down. I would wait until DX10 and then put the serious cash into the system. With DX10/quad SLI and a heafty dual core proc, FSX will run exceptionally well, ... but even with that, you still won't be able to max it out. The quad core proc's and the next gen SLI will be necessary to do that.

Thats the idea.  I'm just gonna wait until windows vista is out, then get the whole shmear in one hit. Grin

In the mean time tho, I'll just have to work to make money for all this stuff.

These are the things to keep your eyes on:
ASUS          M2N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD            Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor
Corsair       TWIN2X2048-8500C5 - 2GB Kit, XMS 2, DDR2 1066 MHz
PC Power   Turbo-Cool® 850 SLI (850ETX-PFC)
& Cooling

So keep your eyes peeled. Shocked
