I purchased via download the 9.1-meter scenery for the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Monument Valley in southeastern  Utah, near Mexican Hat. I am trying to find those rock spires that soar so many hundreds of feet into  the air; the ones that occassionally show up in beer commercials. I think Metallica did a video that had the bandmembers standing on them. I think Britney Spears did a vid on them, as well. What's-his-name Federline did not appear-- and that's a good thing. Does anybody know exactly where these spires are or what they are called? Thanks.

To see 9m terain with all its detail, you must edit your FS9.cfg file before the sim will display the full detail scenery:

TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21 <---- set this to 21

In the area "SELECT A FLIGHT" -

Choose Category: "FSGENESIS"

Choose Flight: Select the FSGenesis Flight you wish to take.

...all of the above was listed during the install process as you were clicking , next, next, next..

You will need to fly around and explore the areas from each airport to locate specifics in the scenery. Its all there.

One trick I use is google... search, in example:

Mount Rushmore Longitude Latitude

....will give you the exact location at which point you can use the SHIFT-Z feature of the sim to see exactly where you are in Longitude and Latitude and either SLEW yourself to where you want to be, or fly toward the right direction.

You are correct, Nick. I saw a screen that had a bunch of things on it that I did not understand while I was clicking like a madman. I guess this is to what you are referring. Now, if I just understood what you wrote I might see the glory of 9-meter terrain. Where exactly do I find this file I must change? I navigated to the FS9 files, but never saw anything like you suggest.

FS9.cfg is a file I would get well-acquainted with, if I were you.  It can allow you to up the FS9 experience considerably, just by editing a few lines of code.  The FS9 directory is set up to optimize itself on most machines, but if you have access to a high-end or medium machine, you can get so much more out of the sim by working on the FS9.cfg file.

!!!!!CAUTION!!!!!

ABSOLUTELY NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU SCREWING UP YOUR SYSTEM OR FS!

That being said, its located here:

Documents and Settings-->User Name-->Application Data-->Microsoft-->FS9-->fs9.CFG

I have a shortcut for it on my desktop, so that I don't have to come back to the forums each time and scream "WHERE THE HECK IS THE CONFIG FILE?!" Wink

rootbeer,

The line you have to change is in the fs9.cfg file.

If you are running XP it is on the boot drive (usually C: ) in the Documents and Settings for your XP account Username.  To see it I think you have to activate viewing "hidden" files and folders.

Do a search for fs9.cfg in the XP "search" function.  Or see the sticky at the top of the fs2004 forum for more info for finding it.  Or look here:

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=COF;action=display;num=107...

The area in question is called Monument Valley.

best,

.....................john

PS:  I too created a fs9.cfg icon on my desktop....... caues I am always tweaking stuff too.

Thank you, gentlemen. I shall see to it in a bit, after a little nap. Last night was the long trip of the week and I went straight from work to the shootin' range after a brief stop at home to pick up my weaponry. Best not to try to edit such critical files while dead tired.

OK; I made the change from 19 to 21 in the Terrain_Max_Vertex_Level line of the FS9.cfg file. Let's see what goes down now...

Everyone needs to get this...

All I can say is "WOW!!!" Sitting back six or seven feet from the monitor, the Grand Canyon looks almost like a photograph. For 12 bucks, you can't go wrong. I can't wait to get my other ones, the West Coast and the Rockies, in 38-mt and put them into action.

Thank you, gents, for the info as to how to get it to show up.

Rootbeer,

I have FSGenesis mesh for almost the entire world now.  It is GREAT.

You likely will get addicted to mesh.... so do yourself a favor and (at least) get the 1 year FSGenesis membership.  That cuts your cost WAY down if you are going to install a lot of mesh.  And the volume download discounts still apply! With the membership, a single download that might cost something like $10 for a non-member....... now costs something like $1.75.  If you download a lot during that year... it works out very favorably.

best,

..................john

PS:  Get the Grand Tetons...... spectacular!  And get Hawaii too Wink.

Well, I don't know how much I'll be downloading over the coming year. I ain't much of a pilot-- I more or less just hotrod around a small area for a while, then hang it up. I know nothing about how to start and prosecute a flight from one point to another as would be done in a real airplane, although I think that would be a blast. The Rocky Mountain and West Coast states is where the majority of America's beauty is; I can't see needing any mesh from the Plains or Appalachian states. I used to live in northern Virginia and moved to Nevada to be around big mountains and wide open spaces. Having a 9-meter mesh of Alaska would be cool...

There's a simple solution: fly the tutorials!!!  Nearly everyone here (unless they started FSing a loooooong time ago) have done them.  They're a little titchy and sometimes confusing, but for the most part, they'll teach you how to fly and how to get around.

Then ask questions in the FS2004 forum.  Just ask any question you have, and you almost inevitably be given the answer.  If it has to do with actual flying, you're bound to get some sort of info, and often too much to handle! Wink

Becoming a "pilot" is all about patience and a willingness to learn.

Setting TERAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL to 21 can cause a big hit on frame rates for some people. Setting it to 20 works well also. Default is 19.

I always loved mesh and so far have downloaded some very nice free stuff, but have been ever so tempted to get the FSGenesis stuff.

For those that want to test some really nice free mesh in the Hood River, Columbia River Gorge area, you can go to Hover Control and download the cr_gorge.zip and cr_upd1.zip by Holger Sandman. Very large area and there is tons of other scenery to go into that area based on the mesh.

Even though it is a site dedicated to the Helo pilot, there are plenty of floatplane bases, default bases and addon bases for fixed wing acft. in that area.
