Very very sad, but I suppose in todays big business such relatively young historic building stand no chance... Sad

Making money and being the best in business is a lot more important than taking pride in it's past (I'm talking in general terms, not T2) and being friendly towards aviation commuity (somewhat OT there I know) in this day and age. My local airport (EGNT) suffers as a result of the main men in charge having this attitude, thanks to them my last visit to an airport only 10 miles away is now almost a year ago.

Ah well. Nothing lasts for ever. I have fond memories of days spent spotting on the top of the then brand new Queen's building. That was in the days of real airliners. Tongue Wink

Can this be correct? Quote:
Newcastle Airport (IATA: NCL, ICAO: EGNT) is the ninth largest airport in the United Kingdom. It is located about 6 miles (11 km) from Newcastle city centre.

Newcastle Airport is owned by seven local authorities (51%) and Copenhagen Airport (49%).

I'd be a little more interested in civil aviation if they all were still like that!

Pretty much sums up my feelings on airliners as well. Older or Bigger types (747s DC8s etc) are of interest but the now common stuff like B737s holds no interest to me whatsoever. I just wish EGNT were a little less strict with people wanting to photograph outside (and that some interesting types would actually come here instead of just darn Easyjets, Ba and RyanAir and other typical regional types!).

They aren't old! Grin Comets, and 707s and Connies and DC-6's are old! Well, I suppose a DC-8 qualifies too...

Brittannias too, and Viscounts and Vanguards and Tridents and VC-10s! That's what you need... Grin

[edit]well, I suppose a 747's sort of "big"... Grin

I found these interesting clips of Heathrow in the early days. This is what it was like when I was a young sprog in short trousers.

Into the Blue (1950) How Britain developed her civil airlines since the war.

London Airport (1949) The story of a great engineering feat - the building, at Heathrow, of one of the largest airports in the world.

Both are Public Information films by the Crown Film Unit. You can play or download them in various formats.

PS. Harry Enfield fans will see where the inspiration for Mr Cholmondley-Warner (pronouced Chumley-Warner) came from. Wink
