Hello Lads...

Windows XP displaying in "Classic" Mode.

I have suddenly inherited this annoying effect which I had got rid of years ago... Shocked

...!
It seemed to occur after I had installed a Microsoft application called dotnetfx.exe which was required for one of my programs.....

Previously when I pressed the power button my computer case, the program would run through it's DOS check, display the Windows opening screen, then proceed immediately to my Desktop.
The same thing when shutting down, click "Start" followed by "Shutdown" and the computer would immediately shut down..!
Now...
Now I have to go through clicking the long-winded Administrator request windows when starting up and closing down the computer... Angry

Buggar...!
Can one of you kind lads lead me through the process of reverting the program back to the way it was before... Shocked

I think it's something to do with the "Administrator" settings but I can't locate the required box to tick... Cry

I don't need to go through all this "Administrator checking" malarkey when starting up and closing down Windows...!!
LOL...!

Someone here sorted it out for me some years ago, but I've forgotten how to do it now...
...(including how to start-up Windows... Wink

dotnetfx.exe you say... I have a feeling this could be the ASP.NET account. It's part of the .NET Framework in any case... Got a couple of ideas:

1) Get to the desktop, do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and end the dotnetfx.exe process. Then try and shut the computer down. If that works, then that's at least isolated the problem.

2) Go to user accounts in the Control Panel, and delete the ASP.NET account (assuming it's there). Then again, try shutdown/startup.

See if either of these helps. If not, let me know and I'll think a bit further.

I deleted the Icon and the Net Account from the Log-In window but it didn't make any difference to the start-up or shut down...It still insists in displaying the log-in/out windows Angry

The application dotnetfx.exe was required to get "Editvoicepack31" to work for FS 2004...It wasn't needed for anything else... Wink

...!

I've got a nagging feeling that it is necessary to make an alteration in the Windows Registry...via regedit...to by-pass the Log-in/Log-out request windows... Wink

I got all this working years ago...but I've forgotten how it was done now... Cry

Hi both of you...

Ramos: It's installed as part of the .NET Framework, it's bacially just an account for framework/shell services to use as far as I know.

Fozzer, another idea has leaped into my mind: Grin

1) Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
2) In the list of users, highlight the user account you want automatically logged on.
3) Uncheck Users must enter a Username and password...
4) Click Apply.
5) In the next dialog, enter the password for the account you selected in Step 2, if any
6) OK your way out.

That should, in theory, sort out the logon bit. With any luck it will get rid of the logoff box as well.

Again, let me know how it goes. I'll look into it even further if that method doesn't work.

"control userpasswords2" is an unusual DOS command that I haven't come across before, and it's probably not accessible via Windows... Wink

I will make a note of your instructions and write them on the toilet wall in front of the Loo...

LOL... good good. That thing is somehow accessible from Windows, but it's hidden somewhere deep in the depths of the operating system... "CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2" is just a quick way of getting there.
