I just red in the Airshow thread about the idea of a Simviation Multiplayer Server. I think this is a great idea
and is worth itīs own thread.

So letīs just use this thread to gather ideas how this could be accomplished.

This is a list what I think would be needed
and what would be great to have optional.

1. We need a permanent Windows Server online.
2. We need someone to make the setup.
(I have experience with setting up a FSHost Server
Jared has.. I think Nemo, too and probabely a lot of others)
3. We need a handfull of admins who are visiting this server from time to time. They should be able to make port scans.. to check for closed/open ports.

optional.
4. A FSNavigator Server (donīt know if this requires some special setup)
5. A CFS 2 or 3 Server for Dogfights

For voice communications we could use my teamspeak server that is allready used in a lot of sessions. (Simviation could make a forward... like ts.simviation.com would point to ts.netfrag.org to have less confusing urlīs)

These are my ideas so far.

cheers

I'm actually looking at setting one up at the moment, i'm going to try out a couple of things later when i get back from work. also the teamspeak server would be very useful.

I'll let you all know how it goes later on today.

Hi Sam and Nemo,
Sam that would be a really good idea. (Then we wouldn't have to invade WSP's servers! Cheesy)

Nemo, if you need any help with the server setup, just ask and I can try and help. Wink Good luck with setting it up! 8)

Hey this sounds great !!
Nemo let me know if I can help you.

I will gather some informations regarding the FSNavigator thing.

cheers

edit: Looks like FSNavigator is just an Option on the FSHost
Server that must be enabled + the ports on that server must be open.

Another question.. anyone got experience in setting up a CFS 2 or 3 Server ?

Can it not be done on non windows? Running  windows on a web server is asking for trouble - it's just not up to anything - creates so many temp files & needs rebooting all the time. In short windows is not an efficient OS.

There must be a way with Linux/Freebsd/Unix ....

That was my first idea, too. But I searched the web,
asked here on simv and on other forums. And so far noone
seems to have a non-windows solution. Well Iīm not 100% shure about Vatsim. It looks like they use
something like a self made server wich might run on Linux
.. but this is just speculation.
I also heard that setting up a FS Server on a windows emulator does not work because of the missing DirectX Components. If anyone finds a solution, I could make
a Setup on my Server.. I still have 30gb traffic more or less unused.. each month Smiley

The problem seems to be that if the private server (Sim V Member?) shuts down his computer for any reason then everyone connected to it gets thrown out.
Servers such as WS Pilots, (or Simviation?), are permanantly "on"...
...Maybe that's the difference...?

The point of this thread is to :

set up a Simviation on line flight thing - Reliable - on all the time with great access.

Can we please get back to the subject instead of people jumping in saying 'I'll host it'....

Now how do we set this thing up?

Gotta be unix/Linux or similar.

This is from the FSHost FAQīs
--------
Can FSHost run on Unix/Linux?

Unfortunately, no.  Flight Simulator uses Microsoft's DirectPlay (part of DirectX) for all of the game communication, so that's what FSHost uses to talk to it. Unfortunately DirectPlay is a proprietary system, and so far hasn't been ported to the Unix environment. (There are some systems such as WINE that have made attempts, but so far I don't believe anyone's gotten it to work completely yet.) I'd love to build a Unix version though, so maybe one day we'll be able to.
---------

I donīt know how old these FAQīs are. I came across
this.
http://www.transgaming.com/products_linux.php

I donīt know
With this tool it looks they got most (even directX9) games
running under linux. It would be worth an experiment.
Maybe I can make a test this weekend.
Iīll ask in the FSHost and Transgaming Forum if
someone allready tried FS or FSHost with this software.

If this does not work.. we must think of a windows solution !

Well it doesnīt look good for a Linux Version.
Check the link I posted above.

According to the FSHost Admin Microsoft moved away from
Directplay (DirectX wouldnīt be the problem.. but directplay
is).
This is the reason why noone is really working on a directplay api for Linux. But this also means that future versions of Flightsim probabely will use another Protocol
wich might be easier to implement in Linux (pure speculation)
So maybe (MAYBE donīt quote me on that) the situation changes with FSX. We could now just wait until FSX is released, look if things have changed...
than wait again until someone releases a dedicated Linux
Server. But I could imagine that Microsoft is trying to prevent their Games beeing played on Linux.

Or we look out if some company provides acceptable Windows Server. Actually a FSHost Server doesnīt need very much.. expect a .. well.. not to slow internet connection. But the Server itself doesnīt have to be State of Art. I could imagine a 1ghz CPU with 500mb Ram
and a small Harddrive could easily host 3 Servers.

My Provider unfortunately only offers Linux Server.
I have not yet found an acceptable offer.
I anyone knows some good offers.. please post them here.

cheers

First off I would love to be involved in the admin and/or setup of this project if it does indeed go somewhere Smiley

Secondly has anyone talked to the guys over at wspilots.com to see how they go about doing something like this? Perhaps they can offer an opinion and clear up some confusion?

They got FSHost working on our Linux Server.
Itīs at the moment still very experimental... but if nothing

Feel free to test it !!

FSNavigator  seems to work quit well.
