The most common problems causing this are:
1. Are your repainted textures in the correct textures folder for the aircraft?

2. HAve you renamed you repainted textures?

3. Have you saved your repainted textures in the SAME format as the original (or at least, not 24-bit (16M color) format.)?

Admittedly, PhotoShop is the industry standard.  It's worth learning it.  However, having said that, other useful graphics programs are Corel (formerly JASC) Paint Shop Pro X, Gimp! (freeware), pixia (freeware), and even MS Paint.  I would also add FS Repaint!, from Abacus, which is a flightsim-specific texture editing program.  You can use either the built in (very basic) editor, or use it in coordination with a paint program.

Photoshop is the industry standard as Felix said, however if you want a program with a different interface than Photoshop's, I would suggest you try Paint Shop Pro, either Corel's PSP X or one of the older JASC versions. I have used 7 through X and depending on the interface style you prefer any one of them is good. Paint Shop Pro 7's interface is like a super-deluxe version of MSPaint, 8, 9 , and X have interfaces more like the modern Photoshop interfaces. Also, while Photoshop is the industry standard, you can get the same results with Paint Shop Pro, just without all of the pricy bells and whistles Adobe included in Paint Shop Pro.

You can find image editing software being given away nearly every month on magazine cover CDs.  Find one that you like, learn to use it (some will do more than others) and become proficient with it.  Don't believe the powerful (and expensive) packages will do the work for you!  Sure they may make it easier, but I've seen some very impressive work done with just plain old MS Paint.

Take the time to learn your package, I'm still happily using my old PhotoStyler 2.0 SE which is Win 3.11 vintage!  I'm very familiar with it and it still runs under WinXP.

Take the time to learn about repaints too, I was pretty impressed with my first one but I can do far more now that I've gained some experience.

Anyway, back to the problem: can you copy the relevant bit from your aircraft.cfg and post it here?  I had a similar problem the other night with a texture not showing, it was because I'd made a simple typo in the .cfg file!

Its unprecedented low-speed landing and takeoff performance along with its luxuriously wide fuselage would make the 727 by far the most popular aircraft in the world through the first 35 years of jet transportation. In 1967 the 727-200 was introduced with a 20-foot-longer fuselage which could accommodate up to 189 passengers.
