Fly2e:
Wowza! Wonderful shots. I love the 737, and I don't think anyones made the PF Lear60 look that good.
ramsa329:
Changing aspect ratios... which would involve cropping, at least to some extent? As to not distort the original? It might also be useful to point out that none of those images above have the same aspect ratio?
You're saying it's bad to "remove the parts which are blurry or poorly positioned etc"? Well, maybe not in Payware, but under 'Edited Screenshots,' I don't see why that has to be disallowed. Not everyone has a system up to par with yours, and not everyone has the time or money to use your service, and, regardless, editing your screenshot afterwards is only to allow for that screenshot to look as good as possible given what you have to work with. That, if FS screenshot taking can be considered an art, involves at least some creativity aside from setting the shot up in the first place. Why should you be one to say whether or not a person can or cannot 'crop' or 'change aspect ratios' on shots after the fact?
Cropping is part of editing, seeing as how Fly2e probably selected a fixed aspect ratio, dragged the desired portion, and then clicked 'Crop Image' (if he were using PS)...
I don't know. I'm not the person to ask about these things. All hail ramsa, master of taking screenshots in Flight Simulator.

Okay, whatever. Last time I bother giving my opinion on anything. I'm not an equal member of this community, I'm just some stupid pleb. I get the picture.
Next commentry: Nice shots!
Commentry after that: Nice shots!
Whatever...

Well, I agree with you krigl. I just don't understand ramsa's hatred towards cropping.

Thanks Hatter
I gave my reasons, which are genuine ones, for cropping because I think it adds to a pic, and resent being told that I actually do these things for different reasons, and that it's basically because I am crap, and the results of my hard work are crap
I started cropping pics after seeing some great shots by Ozzy which were cropped....and I see no reason why I should not be allowed to state my opinions about why I think it adds to our hobby without being treated like a scumbag.
About my 'art gallery' statement, I don't think it's irrelevant. Pictures come in all sorts of shapes and sizes in an art gallery, and there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why the same should not be true of our 'art'. If it is good enough for DaVinci and Goya then it's good enough for me. As I said in my post, the artist decides what to include and what not BEFORE painting, and selects the format in which they paint - portrait, panoramic, whatever. No artist only paints 800x600 every time. We can only take shots in that format so why not crop after. Or 'edit by changing the aspect ratio' if you like, whatever.
Thats just my opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with me...there are ways and ways to disagree though...
I comment on a lot of people's pics and always post something positive. It would be nice if everyone did the same. In the space of just a couple of days I'm again surprised by how agressive and negative people can be in this 'freindly forum'. As this is by far the best screenshot forum available this news is depressing.
It is only a few people and that's good at least.
I'm beginning to have a sneaking feeling that I'm going to be regarded as a troublemaker if I continue fighting my position, so I'm calling it a day with this debate as I did with the "walk and follow" one.
So, this is the last I have to say on the subject.
Like I say, it's going to be "Nice shots....nice shots..." from now on

In my experience (and I do have some success with graphics) the usual cropping occurs because the user can't handle his/her machine and has no idea how to set-up a flightsim.
And thus, the best thing to do would be spending lots of money on the super-special-über-FSGS treatment...
Quote:
A correctly set-up sim needs no cropping and it has nothing to do with walk and follow active camera or any other add-on!!!!!
Cropping makes uninteresting shots interesting and has nothing to do with an ugly, wrongly set up sim.

And I would have no problem doing some comparison shots with anyone on this forum or any other.
Okay, name a freeware add-on (aircraft and/or airfield), a time of day, a weather theme and a location.

Interesting responses.
As long as you all agree on something than everything is fine.
If I disagree than I'm a bully pushing you around and insulting you even though this has nothing to do with any of you personally.
So apparently even though my opinion is obviously the minority opinion. I have no right to express it for fear of upsetting the whole of the world.
This is my opinion and if it bothers you than deal with it.
Show me how good you are in the screenshot competitions and as a judge I'll respond.
As for you Heretic:
I would suggest that you leave Fs-Gs out of your comments.
And I cannot stress this enough ................You have no idea of what you are talking about at all in any way whatsoever!!!!!
You pick the plane the place the time and I'll pick the judge.
Fly2e will judge.
No one else.
You do whatever editing you want and I'll shoot straight.

Ramsa, the problem is not that you disagree or that you have different opinions. I have no doubt that you can take better screenshots than me, and I think Fly2e, Omag, Lemoncat, Spitroast and a ton of others can take better shots than me. So what. I try to improve but this isn't a competition, it's just fun.
My problem is in the way you criticise... I've seen your pics and they are excellent. The service you offer is also good, I'm sure... it isn't necessary to criticise the views of others in such a way however, just because you have da skillz... Heretic and I had a fundamental disagreement the other day but managed to keep it within the realms of acceptable debate. I respect that Heretic has different views and I know that in the past I've changed my mind about things....so I can't say 100% that he's wrong.
However, I don't like being told 'I have no idea what I'm talking about', that if I state that cropping allows the remainder of the picture to be saved at a higher quality level means I'm 'whining about compression boo hoo what a joke' etc.
I also don't like it that you misquote me (as with the art gallery post) so I have to waste my time correcting you.
The way in which you phrase your comments leaves no doubt of your lack of respect for people who don't share your views. I know you're a specialist in graphics 'stuff' and can do many things with the pc that I have no clue about...and I think 'wow, must be a nice job'... but... well, just read through your two posts... if you can't see anything wrong with the way you are expressing your views there's nothing much humble me can do
...except just to say, please, don't bother commenting on my posts like that again. I'm a 33 year old guy with a family who enjoys screenshot taking and casual flying. I'm not an ignorant child, and I don't come on SimV to be dealt with like this. I'm not your inferior for some arcane reason like I don't understand pcs, I crop etc. So please, speak to me as an equal or don't bother at all.
Thanks
Krigl

Krigl,
At no time were any of my comments directed at you personally but at what I did and do still consider an excuse.
In the same way that I consider the issue of compression an excuse.
In all the time that I have been posting on these forums I cannot ever remember even one question that someone asked me about compression.
As a person who runs a completely unique service I find it strange that I am never asked even though my shots are very detailed and would in most cases and in the hands of others not be within size limits.
Nor have I ever been asked any questions about .cfg files settings or most anything else.
At 57 yrs old with 3 children all of whom are teenagers I also have gone down a couple of roads in my life.
It took me years to develope a business as unusual yet as successful as mine.
I had to convince clients of mine that it was to their benefit to pay me and my company for screenshots. They had to see each time how their traffic increased at their sites and how the shots could enhance their sites reputation.
To me the screenshots forums are the most important part of any site. They define the site and its art and give clients and users the best opportunity to experience a product.
I still disagree with you about the art comparison you made and nothing will change that and like you about me I didn't like the ideology or the tone which is why I replied.
800x600 is the canvas on which I paint and I choose it bcause it works best for me as an artist.
As you said the size of the canvas is irrelevant unless of course the artist deliberately uses it to mask his/her lack of vision or technique.
and in no way was my reply a comment about you or your shots, your intelligence or your age. I happen to like your shots.
So don't get your feathers all ruffled. Feel free to say whatever you want about the shots that I post.
Oh and by the way I rarely reply to posts in such detail. I too have very little time to "correct" you.
But again there was no personal attack and if you perceived it as that than I apologize.
As to Heretic apparently for him it's a little more than just fun.
and I more than resent his comment about my business.
and his very ill-advised challenge.

Thanks Ramsa, I guess that makes us on an even keel now...I like your work and I'm glad it seems we'll be able to put this behind us.
The way your posts were written made it seem 'personal' to me (perhaps I'm too sensitive) and I just thought you should be aware of that, just as I unwittingly managed to irritate you and some other guys a few months back....I hope all is okay now between us...
Thanks for taking the time...
Best regards
Krigl

Cropping is allowed here and a nice little frame around your shot too!
This forum is for those of us who like the art of screenshot taking and I am not going to create some type of regulated rule forum here in Payware!!
Since we pay to play, the rules here are a little less strict when it comes to a frame here or there OR a crop here or there.
Wight & size always apply but as for a crop or frame, it does not deserve to be in an edited forum!
I will not be around today as I am heading into New York City.
Play nice!!!

I like cropping. It means every picture is different, and very few screenshots I post fit the generic 800x600, but tend to be 800xsomething else! It also means I can quite happily place the aircraft off centre in the picture, making it a little different...
I do exactly the same with my photos.
