I have the USA Extreme Landscapes scenery add-on. I was just now flying one of the canned flights-- something about a trip over someplace in Hawaii, but not the one with the volcano erupting. Anyway, as I'm flying along, I see palm trees floating in the air like hot air balloons. What the blue blazes is this? I don't smoke weed or drink while I'm flying, so what's going on?

Floating trees in FS2002, gotta learn to luv 'em.  I've got Gerish's trees, I think, sometimes some of them float, and in various locations throughout.  So it might not be specific to the USA add-on (which I know nothing about).  I just ignore them or dig on them, depending on my mood.  I don't know the cause and don't think there's any fix for it.
