Search SimV for 'repaint' over the past couple of months (+60 days) and get an idea of what  processes are involved.

The easiest program is payware: Abacus FSRepaint at $29 -- well worth its price.

The best freeware repaint program isPixia

Always repaint aircraft using layers!
Pixia ver. 3.3 is now available!

Pilot - Since I believe you're asking how map your model parts, make sure you've gone through the gmax tutorials on UVW mapping.

There are some good mapping tutorials here and at Freeflight Design Shop.

honestly, using any cheap application I've found has had horrible results. You're best off just saving up for Photoshop or Paintshop Pro. They are both professional grade applications and can do everything you ever wanted them to.

Use DXTBmp to convert the textures to DXT1.

Step-by-step

1. Apply textures in Gmax in normal format [24-bit]
2. Convert textures to DXT1 [with DXTBmp] format
3. Export visual model

Just before doing all this, just make sure that all related textures have the suffix *_t.bmp appended to them. Examples:

Surface_Texture_t.bmp
Interior_Texture_t.bmp

etc.

The "t" tells FS that this is a normal texture, but the texture must in either 16-bit or DXT1 [a texture without reflections] format so that FS can render the textures.

What are the names you've assigned to the light parts?

Have you followed the makemdl tags for lights?

Pilot, as you can see, making a plane for FS is not easy. In fact, anything involving 3D modeling is never easy. That's what the tutorials are there for. At first glance, the tutorials may not make much sence, but over time, as you read them real carefully over time, they will make sence.

It takes understanding of both addon development in Gmax and the open architecture of the Flight Simulator world. It took many months, if not years, for many of our developers to both learn and understand Gmax and FSDS. So, our best advice and recommendation is to go back to those tutorials [that were made by professionals who have clear understanding] and learn from them.

I was just like you when I first got Gmax since FS2k2. Going around the forums, asking people around for this or that. But in the end, I came to realize that there will be a time where I have to learn to do things on my own. Besides, not everybody here in the forums will be around forever.

Hmm... is it just me, or am I starting to sound like my parents? Roll Eyes

Check my signature for the 2k4 SDK section, and find the one for Gmax.  It has a little file in there that contains every name for every part you will ever want to use (and some you will NEVER use Roll Eyes).

OR

Go to http://www.freeflightdesign.com/utilities.html and download the TagTool for Gmax (I assume that's what you're using).  Its a handy little plugin that allows you to simply click a box and the part is automatically named whatever you want it to be.
