Well it's realtime atm hehe, sitting at around 280k atm. I can easily render that in near realtime. (21.4fps) I'm speaking of the Utility where you can set max. Unforntunently it only goes up to 1,000,000 but that's alright.

You can also check your polycount under file/summary info/
But be warned Nurbs generate much more polys on rendertime than what is shown in the max tools (poly counter and so on..). And max unfortunately has a memory
problem that keeps most renderers to render more than 3-4 million polys of non-instanced geometry (those "I can
render 5 billion poly" news you might remember were all
using instances). I said most renderers because Brazil
is the only integrated renderer  wich can render more.. through internal compression. I think the barrier is at around 8 million. 2,5 Million polys in your viewport might easily generate 10 million on rendertime. But you have detailed control about the tesselation of the viewport and render model in the "Surface Approximation" Rollout.
Personally I´m a Vray geek and can only suggest to give it a try if you haven´t allready. It´s speed is just amazing !!

I am quite aware of that. I've collapsed the nurbs to become poly though. So I dont have that problem. I've easily rendered 12million before. I've had up to 15 in viewport though (that sucked my video card up though hehehehe)

my system is as follows:

Duel AMD Athlon XP 3800
4.5gb DDR Ram
Duel ATI X850 256mb GDDR-2

Basicly a custom Alienware. I can handle quite a bit. Need to consitering it's my job to create high res models.
