Actually, dsl isn't expensive.

SBC yahoo offers dsl thats the same price as or in some places CHEAPER than dialup.

I've got an idea that you lucky lot, over your side of the Pond, generally get "things" cheaper than we poor souls over our side of the Pond... Cry...!

My monthly, no contract, dial-up, "Anytime" service costs me £9:99 per month from Freeserve (Wanadoo), with no additional costs on the telephone bill.
A 12 month contract for "low-end" Broadband would cost me at least £17:99 per month*.
* It is currently being advertised at £14:99 per month...
...but...
after the first month it reverts back to the full price of £17:99... Cry...!

Convert these prices into $US and I think you will find that you get it cheaper than we do... Wink...!

Cheers all...!

Pablo...coming into Port... 8)...!

I would be more than happy to pay a higher price for DSL it is just the favt it isn't offered where I live, they say not enough people live out in the area, I don't know how many is "enough" since within the past year about 100 new homes have been put up in the neighborhood.

They give the estimate of 5 years before it is offered, which means by then there will be new technology that is better, lol.
Maybe like the new "outlet box" that delivers broadband via the power lines Wink

i've just installed an external 56k modem for my mum as her computer isn't Broadband ready, just so she can research the family tree and talk to me online instead of ringing me and because hardly anyone in Runcorn is on 56k Dial-up now it is almost as fast as the 1mb broadband package that most company's are offering.

I first started out on Dial-up earlier this year when i got my flat just so i could, find a better job (and it worked) and that enabled me to do certain things that i needed to do, i know people who are on Dial-up and are loving every minute of it because its the easy way onto the Internet and easy to set up and for some people the best option.

in all fairness though the price of broadband/dsl is going up every year, at the moment i'm paying around £25 a month so i can Design Websites and hopefully put them online, which requires a large amount of Flash and Java downloading, Fly online, Research items, and generally chat to people and my gf (who i've been with for 4 months and we are thinking about moving in together)this price gives me a 1gb a day download limit instead of a 3gb a month.

So broadband does have it uses and so does Dial-up.

*steps off soap box and inserts a pound in the meter*

nemo ....... out of breath again .......

...an interesting little snippet... Wink...!

About a year or so ago, I heard on the grape-vine that the telephone company, (British Telecom), were getting so concerned about the loss of revenue due to dial-up users blocking incoming calls on their own phone line, (no-one can contact a dial-up user by phone whilst they are connected to  the Internet), that the phone company seriously considered allowing the dial-up users to obtain Broadband at a nominal cost, or even for free!.
Unfortunately for me and the merry band of dial-up users, so many users have now bitten the bullet and purchased the much more expensive Broadband option, that the free idea has now been dropped...!
...Buggar... Angry...!

If, and when, the cost of Broadband drops to the same price as dial-up I may consider going over to it... Roll Eyes...!
...in the meantime, my "Anytime" dial-up option suits me admirably. I rarely download very large files, and although turning pages can be a little slow at times, I am imbibed with sufficient patience to wait... Grin...!
LOL...!

Cheers, all Happy Dial-Up Users... 8)...!

P.S. Interestingly, with my excellent hardware set-up, I have no problems playing on-line, with everything maxed, using dial-up... 8)...!
..so there... Grin...!
LOL...!

If you want to just speed up your dial-up connection there's software called OnSpeed that gets you to almost low end DSL speed for a one-off £24.99.

Get it at the folloowng link

Hi Paul, a few years ago you could get a second line on BT, I used it , I could download stuff from the 'net, pick up the phone dial "2" (I think) this gave me the dial tone and could ring out with the other line. I can't remember what it was called. This was before broadband took off.

You plonker - your eyes must be going as well as your grey stuff  Smiley

PlusNet broadband is £14.99 per month inc VAT. Period. That's what it costs. No increases after 3 months. Nada.

For goodness sake, their Premium Business package is only £21.99 per month so they're hardly going to increase your residential package to more than that are they?

I never lie...... Wink
