WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR INVADES ENGLAND:
September 28, 1066
If you need further explanation, it appears that Hagar's ancestors decided that Normandy was not going to be enough to constrain the antics of their future offspring, so Slick Willie decided to muscle in on Harry's territory.
Harry was already a wee bit tired from a scrap he'd just had, so Willie caught him in bad shape and beat the poop out of him, and so won the game of King of the Hill.

Actually, Harry was winning intill Willy made a mock retreat and tricked Harry into coming off his hill.

Ah, an excuse for a celebration. This merits a drop of the hard stuff.

I've never traced my ancestry but it's quite possible I have Norman blood in my veins. On the other hand I might be one of Harry's motley crew.

Thanks Omag. Its a tad chilly outside to go prancing around in my tights. Think I'll settle for a drop of the golden nectar & propose a toast to my ancestors, whoever (or whomever) they might be.
Here's to Harry & Willy, not forgetting that hairy bunch of ruffians in skirts who invented Scotch whisky. Cheerio chaps, down the hatch.

wasn't there a 60 foot wall carpet picturing that war, or at least a battle of it?

It was the Battle of Hastings in 1066. About the only date most people remember from their school history lessons.

Ruddy Normans
I can trace my heritage back to a mixture of Celt and Viking! Death to all invaders, Saxons, Normans, but NOT Japanese tourists as we need their money

If that's true, one of your female ancestors obviously didn't feel quite the same way.

What you have to remember Doug is I come from a long line of nymphomaniacs, my father was a nymphomaniac. My grandfather was a nymphomaniac. My great-grandfather....

Hmm... dictionary.com reveals that nymphomania is a typical femal problem... So it wasn't the male side of your family that made you what you are Ozzy!
I've got dark hair... so somewhere along my ancestorial history, a Spanish wiener was involved!
It's all in the mix!

I should have qualified that by saying most British people of my generation. The 1980s were far in the future when I was at school. 1949 was the present & 1939-45 too recent to be in the history books. I was born in 1943.
I very much doubt that the majority of schoolchildren in this country now would know anything about the Battle of Hastings or its significance. From what I understand, anything before the 1960s is regarded as ancient history now & not worth bothering about.

My history is a little rusty so I'm wondering why 1949. I believe that was the year that the USSR detonated their first atomic bomb-therefore the quickly escilitatig Cold War had completely entered the atomic age? I find it interesting that 1949 is not a major date taught in history classes here. I remember it getting mentioned, but nothing more than that. Is that a date that gets more attention in the other parts of the world?

Strange... I would never have believed you were that old; aside from the religious field, I, rather,
know
of an event in
1492
for which we have minor holiday coming up mid-October.

Rollo was the initial leader of the particular
vikings
to become known as the
Normans
(Norse Man [aka viking] = North man [or man of the north] thus Nor-man).

Not all by themselves,
Omag
. Besides, in most cultures it's the mother who has the most initial influence even in the area of learning. Perhaps
ozzy
's reference is to whom wore the pants in the family
(for those familiar with the term)
-- or, more often, didn't.

Hmm, standard stuff? ... all this time I was sure Australia had advanced more than that. 8)

1949 -- (aside from my own family link to that year):
in respect to
Heretic
would most probably be that the Federal Republic of Germany was established and Nazi assets were returned to German supervision;
the era of U.S. television "sitcoms" began;
RCA developed a "compatible" color TV;
People's Republic of China was formally established;
The Geneva Convention (again).
I'm sure there are many others and I admit I don't remember exact dates -- but, hey, you can look them up:P. 8)

The question inferring that Australia was yet in the Middle ages was an intended jest -- not an attempt to suggest that it is

I would say ruddy normans but my ancestry can be dated back to 1066 when some junior Knight in Willie boys band of brigands was given a small parcel of land just outside Canterbury. I guess I'm a 37th generation immigrant LOL.

There's a date I never remember... but I know what came next for that bunch: the invasion of Ireland in the early 1100s... and somewhere in there some of my distant Irish ancestors were born.

In reference to *my* remembering
1493
, that same fellow whose achievement in 1492 is commemorated tomorrow (12OCT), landing on the Island of my birth (Puerto Rico) on November 19, 149
3
As an aside, the Taino Indians populated Puerto Rico (which they called BoriKEN) and other islands of the Central Caribbean. It was their word "juracán" (hoo-ra-KAN) that gives us the current word "Hurricane"

The accepted, historical date is 12-October. This is one of those days that has been "mondayized" for convenience.
