"The Conflicts that most influenced the course of History"
William Weir, published by Barnes & Noble.

OF course, as the author indicates in his forward, such a list is necessarily subjective and must take into consideration the times and place where/when such a list is being made.  The author poses his viewpoint, but he also recognizes the works of those before him, including LIddel-Hart.

Topping the list, at No.1 is Maraton - Greeks vs Persians; and at No.7 - Battle of Britain .  In both, the crisis at hand was the survival of democracy.

Fittingly, Hastings comes in at No.14 - considering Oct.14 is the anniversary.

The battle of Hastings? I thought that was initiated in the last days of September for some reason but you are quite correct.
I think I confuse the battle of Stamford Bridge with the landing of the Normans but, hey, I wasn't around in 1066 A.D. Roll Eyes

I just saw this book, the hard cover edition, for sale at Barnes and Noble for $9.99 U.S.  Now that's a bargain price for this book!

Just curious, for anyone who has the book, where does the Battle of Zama in 202 BC rank?  Even though few have ever heard of it it influenced the course of history pretty significantly, as in had the Romans not won it there never would have been a Roman empire or at least not one controlled by Europeans.

Interestingly, the author considers Zama as a footnote to Cannae (216BC) as the more decisive.  Hannibal won, but while the Romans lost heavily (70.000 legionnaires is the figure quoted), Hannibal could not provoke a revolt in the Italian peninsula, and eventually was called back to Carthage.  He won the battles (over a 14 year period in the Italian peninsula, but lost the War of attrition that resulted.

Recalled to Carthage, he was defeated at Zama (202BC) by Scipio Africanus (Cornelius Publius Scipio)

Cannae is listed as #23.

But then you can ponder where your floundering battle in the sea might rate in a sequal! Also, you can float southwest and catch a hurricane (or it, you). There seems to be plenty of them heading this way, of late. Tongue

Yeah, Cannae was Hannibal's victory but it did him no good in the long run since he still lost people while fighting while the Romans could mostly keep replacing legionaries.
