I should have qualified that by saying most British people of my generation. The 1980s were far in the future when I was at school. 1949 was the present & 1939-45 too recent to be in the history books. I was born in 1943.

I very much doubt that the majority of schoolchildren in this country now would know anything about the Battle of Hastings or its significance. From what I understand, anything before the 1960s is regarded as ancient history now & not worth bothering about. Roll Eyes

1949

My history is a little rusty so I'm wondering why 1949.  I believe that was the year that the USSR detonated their first atomic bomb-therefore the quickly escilitatig Cold War had completely entered the atomic age?  I find it interesting that 1949 is not a major date taught in history classes here.  I remember it getting mentioned, but nothing more than that.  Is that a date that gets more attention in the other parts of the world?

I also remember 1493!
Strange... I would never have believed you were that old; aside from the religious field, I, rather, know of an event in 1492 for which we have minor holiday coming up mid-October.

Was that half way to... uh, never mind Roll Eyes

Ruddy Normans Roll Eyes I can trace my heritage back to a mixture of Celt and Viking! Death to all invaders, Saxons, Normans...
Rollo was the initial leader of the particular vikings to become known as the Normans (Norse Man [aka viking] = North man [or man of the north] thus Nor-man).

Hmm... dictionary.com reveals that nymphomania is a typical femal problem... So it wasn't the male side of your family that made you what you are Ozzy!
Not all by themselves, Omag. Besides, in most cultures it's the mother who has the most initial influence even in the area of learning. Perhaps ozzy's reference is to whom wore the pants in the family
(for those familiar with the term)

Hmm, standard stuff? ... all this time I was sure Australia had advanced more than that. 8)

1949 -- (aside from my own family link to that year):
in respect to Heretic would most probably be that the Federal Republic of Germany was established and Nazi assets were returned to German supervision;
the era of U.S. television "sitcoms" began;
RCA developed a "compatible" color TV;
People's Republic of China was formally established;
The Geneva Convention (again).
I'm sure there are many others and I admit I don't remember exact dates -- but, hey, you can look them up:P. 8)

The syllabus requires an introduction to all types of history, H, so that students can gain a better understanding of the differing skills needed in each branch of History.

The question inferring that Australia was yet in the Middle ages was an intended jest -- not an attempt to suggest that it is Roll Eyes.

I would say ruddy normans but my ancestry can be dated back to 1066 when some junior Knight in Willie boys band of brigands was given a small parcel of land just outside Canterbury.  I guess I'm a 37th generation immigrant LOL.

There's a date I never remember... but I know what came next for that bunch: the invasion of Ireland in the early 1100s... and somewhere in there some of my distant Irish ancestors were born.

In reference to *my* remembering 1493, that same fellow whose achievement in 1492 is commemorated tomorrow (12OCT), landing on the Island of my birth (Puerto Rico) on November 19, 1493

Smiley

As an aside, the Taino Indians populated Puerto Rico (which they called BoriKEN) and other islands of the Central Caribbean.  It was their word "juracán"  (hoo-ra-KAN) that gives us the current word "Hurricane"
