I have never tried FS2002, but I am totally amazed with FS2004's capabilities thus far.

One suggestion I would recommend would be to find the taxiway bitmaps and copy them to a different directory (use this directory as your "work" directory). Open them up in Imagetool (available via the terrain tools SDK at Microsoft's FS2004 website). After opening them up in Imagetool, convert the format from either DXT1 (which I believe is the native format) or 32-bit over to 24 bit. Converting them in 24 bit makes them more readily editable in image editing programs. Once there, open up each bitmap and darken them, but leave a little color and light show through so that they'll still be visible at night in FS.  Once done, save each file using its native filename, but add an "_lm" before the *.bmp file extension  (e.g. "taxiway_asphalt_lm.bmp").

I did this to several taxiway textures and it worked fine for me.

Hi, op.

There was no bigger FS2002 fan than me. I went grudgingly over to FS9 about 6 months back - and haven't used FS2002 since!

If you preferred the FS2002 taxiway texture, then perhaps it might be an idea to copy the FS2002 taxiway bitmaps into FS9. I haven't tried it, but since I've done the reverse (used FS9 bitmaps in FS2002), it should work. Remember to back up the original FS9 files so you don't lose them if you don't like the effect (or by some freak of nature, it doesn't work!).
