Would it be possible to give us the ability to lock threads that we start? I don't mean making us all mods, but for example, I could lock a thread that I start, or Bob could lock a thread that he started, but I couldn't lock Bobs thread. see what I'm saying? I think it would help to stop a thread from going into forbidden subjects.

It would be a nice idea. Certainly stop alot of problems quicker. Or at least give someone who's name begins with D more power. Wink Grin

If that means me Craig I don't want more power or I would have accepted the offer of becoming a mod. Wink

However, I would have welcomed the ability to lock one of my own threads (or delete it completely) a couple of days ago. As it was my thread I can't see any objection to that but I doubt it would be possible.

PS. It's none of my business but I think it would be a nice idea for the person locking a thread to give the reason for it before doing so. This sometimes happens but very rarely in my experience which I find very frustrating. Mind you, fortunately not many threads need to be locked.

It's not possible without rewriting it into the yaBB script, which we are loathe to do.

If you want a thread of your own locked, just PM a mod.  Generally mods don't have real lives and jump at the opportunity to lock a thread just for the heck of it.

Of course, we could just astart moving it all over the place...

Please anything but that! Shocked I won't forget last times game. Roll Eyes

As Doug said, it is very frustrating on forums when people lock threads just because they have decided they don't like where it has gone. It is a bit like sitting in a room full of people and then when one feels one has had enough, saying SHUT UP! and proceeding to kick everyone out. I think I prefer the mods at the lock button. 8)

As a general rule though most suggestion in this forum are impossible to carry out or just take too much time.  Roll Eyes

Moving a thread takes almost no time at all... most of the time is spent just deciding what board to move it to!

Yeah, I had a feeling it was either impossible, or would be to much work. You never know if you don't ask, though. Wink

Not sure what you mean here Felix. ??? I was saying that nearly all of the suggestions that are suggested are never carried through because Pete either can't or doesn't have the time to do them + some aren't good ones of course. Wink

lol, isn't it time to move this thread?

On the real issue at hand here I think it would be a good idea for some people, but in another respect some people would see it as a chance to stand up and say anything religious or political they wanted to and then turning around and locking it.

Just my thoughts, nothing more...

ben's got a point there, that would certainly ruin the sef-mod ability (if it were to exist)

i like the idea, but people would do stuff like that.

I dont think it would. Anyone with any respect for this site wouldn't do that, and anyone without it, would find themselves banned very quickly.

It's human nature. I wouldn't and I don't think anyone would post stuff like XXX  sucks and XXX is rubbish etc, but I do think people would post controversial things which naturally provoke folk and if they can't reply to the original thread they may reply by starting and locking their own post. Roll Eyes
If I posted a post at why I though Tony Blair has made a brilliant job of being Prime Minister, loads of folk would be annoyed and would think him a criminal. If I posted he should be removed from office because of the Iraq war or that he is abusing his position and robbing people in tax - people would defend him to death. Grin Seeing as half of people here are American, US politics (which is a very volatile and disagreeable subject! Wink) would be even worse. It also doesn't matter how tactful you are (you either love politicans, you hate them or you are not interested in them) there will always be someone that will be upset.

It is simply only because of human nature that the no-politics, no-religion rule exists. It isn't because of the subject itself that it is not allowed.

See what I mean? Smiley

No not really. Because 1: your bringing up all those things in a post, and whether or not they are used as an example or not they are still being posted when they shouldn't. And 2: you missed the point completely. They can post contreversial posts now that end up locked anyway and then deleted. So they could post it lock and it would still be deleted by the mods. Hell if they locked it themselves it would stop the crap that comes from the ensuing arguments. It may still be there, but the mods will see it and take action by deleting it then warning/banning the offender. As it would be anyway.

But then if people were that good you wouldn't need the locking at all! People could discuss politics/religion as normal as anything else. Grin
