A very good point Joe. A photograph is a photograph, discs can get spoilt and they may contain a thouasnd pics, but if the disc is messed up then it is just ones refletion that it is useful for. Mind you at the same time more people ahve access to cameras and that than ever before.

I love those pics Foz. Very historical. All three are really nice and are excellent history sources. I'm gonna show my sis these - she's doing History at A-level and likes looking at them.  8) I can look at pics like that all day and I am not even doing history. Roll Eyes 8)

The second batch is terrific, Foz- what type of bike is that your dad is tooling around on?
And I agree that there's no substitue for a real print- it's just more tangible; has a special thing about it, esp.  if it's really old.
Funny thing about digital backups: I read once that the Smithsonian Museum once did an exhaustive study on the best possible material overall for very-long-term storage of information. Their choice? Paper. Not plastic, not metal- paper. Exactly why, I'm not sure; that's just what I heard. Not necessarily for graphics, etc, and certainly not ordinary paper... they're probably working on some sort of digital format that is based on paper. Paper discs worked pretty well back in the day- Bayer had a series of field recordings out on laminated-paper phonograph discs back in the 20s or 30s. I've heard some of them played on the radio, and they sound pretty good, even today.
The trick I guess would be reading such a disc or whatever with a laser that won't degrade the paper...
But a quality photo print or negative, sealed to keep out oxygen and kept in a dark, stable environment when not being viewed, will last a long, long time. Now that I've finished scanning all my old prints , I should really get them (and the negatives) out of the shoebox and into something more suitable... Grin.
then there's the rapidly-growing cache of digital pictures from the new camera... ohboy.  Tongue

That's excellent. Far better than I could do now. Just goes to show what can be done. Wink

Photographs can detriorate with time & also get damaged or lost. This is unfortunately what happened to most of mine so I have very few reminders of my past except the pictures in my head. This is fine all the time I have my marbles but I can't show them to anyone else. I also have no proof that anything I say about my past life is in fact true. I have the original of every digital photo I've taken in the last two years stored on a remote hard drive & the best ones also backed up to CD. I have no idea how long these will last but I can always print them out or look at them on my PC monitor or TV screen. This is becoming very popular these days.

No way...  This is the future folks.  I would rather have my pictures nice and safe on a disc any day.  I know right where they are, and can burn any number of them, where with a photo, you only get a one time thing...

The thing I like about about photographs is that you can carry them in your pocket to show to the MAJORITY of folks who dont own, or have have access, to a computer.... Wink...!

During a visit with your CD ROM, try showing your Mate in his mud hut,  in deepest, darkest Africa, pictures of your holiday in Disneyland in Florida* without the use of a "computer"...Wink...!
...that's not going to work..Wink...!!

Cheers all...!

Paul. You can print digital photos out any time you wish & stick them in an album or carry them around in your pocket. If you don't have a printer the friendly people at your local Boot's the Chemists or any camera shop will be delighted to do it for you at a reasonable price. The big advantage is that you can choose which ones to print.

If your friend has a TV set & DVD player (as most people seem to think essential these days even if they live in mud huts) you can bore him to death by sticking that CD ROM or DVD in his DVD player or anywhere else you can think of. Grin

Fozzer,  It was a privilege to do a restore on that photo.
Anything for a Military Vet.  I know I can do better but,
because of the photo being 800 X 600 it is harder to get
a clean restore.  If you want to e-mail the original scan
I will do the restore and send it back. Any other pictures
that needs to be restore I would do it for you or anyone
else.  I enjoy a good challenge and believe me the face
of the one gentlemen in your photo was a challenge.
I know I can do better.

   With Respect, Willit_Run
